Piss Christ vs. Cartoon Jihad
By Rocco DiPippo

FrontPageMagazine.com | February 6, 2006

Back in 1988, Andres Serrano submerged a crucifix in a vat of his urine, photographed the result and called it “art.”

Naturally, many of the world's two billion Christians were bothered by his antics. Members of the U.S. Congress called for a hard look at the National Endowment for the Arts, which had helped fund Serrano. Public outcry against Serrano was vocal and widespread.

As the uproar grew, numerous editorials in defense of Piss Christ, Serrano's controversial creation, were printed in U.S. and European newspapers and the Western cultural elite quickly sprang to his defense. For months, the New York Times beat the “freedom of expression” drum for all its worth, publishing numerous articles and opinion pieces sympathetic to Serrano and depicting him as courageous. In New York City, where Serrano lived, 400 New York artists held a public rally in support of his work and his right to create and display it. Serrano became a celebrated art world hero.

Though some criticisms of Piss Christ, and the man who created it, were intemperate, Serrano's art was never forced underground, nor was his life seriously threatened, nor was he forced into hiding a la Salman Rushdie or placed in protective custody. Violence-prone packs of Christians did not roam the streets of Paris, or London, or Frankfurt, or Madrid, or New York calling for the head of Piss Christ's creator.

Its politically correct to target Christianity but Islam is off limits to even the mildest criticism.

Maybe we should have rampaged through the streets.

We should have at least done a mass protest. Not likely they will get away with it again. The muslim riots have seen to that. Noone in the mainstream media would dare give it attention.

Maybe we should have rampaged through the streets.

I would ask, why not...

Jesus said "Turn the other cheek" - not "Bend over and take it."

I'm not good with Latin, but I know it wasn't butt cheeks that he talked about. Least I don't think so.

I always felt that 'Piss Christ''s only claim to being 'art' was its license to irritate Christians rather than having any intrinsic artistic value. Yet, as the author points out, there were no demonstrations or threats made to speak of resulting from it over nearly 20 years from Christians or Muslims.

In March 2000, CNN showed a picture of the Virgin Mary made out of dung:

Yessiree. Right there on CNN’s website you have a picture of "The Holy Virgin Mary" by British artist Chris Ofili. He used elephant dung and images of female genitalia in that ‘work’.

This garbage posing as ‘art’ was deemed offensive to Christians. CNN had no qualms about showing it and offending Christians. It has remained on their web site until today. Nearly five years now.

In fact, if you click on the link above, you will see this ‘work’ - still proudly displayed on CNN’s website.

Now the violent Muslims are rampaging and burning things - again - about a few cartoons, and CNN says, “CNN has chosen to not show the cartoons out of respect for Islam.”

Follow this link and read the last line in the article.

This is why western civilization is superior to Muslim civilization. We know that for a civilized society to function, its members can't react to an idea or a piece of art they find offensive by rioting, and calling for the murder of people who had nothing to do with that offensive art in the first place. We understand that for a modern society to work, you have to be willing to be offended and if you are offended you have to go about responding by dialogue and peaceful protest not by acting like madmen.

Indeed!! Here's a cartoon that the world can understand...no translation of the English language. Of course, the stuck on stupids will not get it.
