The F-22 shouldn't have a "history". It's supposed to be new!

Only its unprecedented delays make it the oldest "new" aircraft one can think of.

Plenty of testing and refinement of systems is always a good thing. :)

A program that took form 1973 to 2005 to get a operational fighter in the air, that is if its now operational; well to put it kindly is ludicrously long.

After the F-15 was put in service they started thinking about its succesor. That is smart in my opion to always be forward looking. I am sure the DoD already is looking to when UAV's dominate airspace long after the F-22/F-35 are history or winding down. Notice the first prototype doesnt fly until 1990 and it doesnt really look like the finished F-22.

I get an occaisional glimpse of a Raptor here in Panama City, FL. They've been training pilots here at the 43FS at Tyndall AFB for some time now.

Still the pace of development was quite leisurely. Had we got in a shooting war against a capable enemy, we would have our work cut out for us, since Russian first line planes with trained pilots are a match for the aging F15 to F18 series, and the Navy and Marine counterparts of the 70's generation.
