Americans are nervous about the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran, but also worry about the ability of the United States and the United Nations to deal with the situation, a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Monday suggests.
Most respondents saw a high chance that if Iran were to develop nuclear weapons, it would use them against the United States or its ally Israel.
Fifty-nine percent thought Iran would use nuclear weapons against the United States, and 80 percent thought the Iranians would hand them over to terrorists to use against the United States.
More thought Iran would use the weapons against Israel -- 77 percent -- and about as many -- 81 percent -- thought Iran would give them to terrorists who wanted to use them against Israel.
Even if diplomacy were to fail, only 36 percent of those who responded to the survey thought military action would be called for, while 45 percent said it would not.
Moreover, 69 percent said they were concerned that the Bush administration would be too quick to use military force, yet 67 percent were also concerned the United States wouldn't do enough to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

We're just raising liquor sales and helping the Iraqi economy instead.
So Americans agree we are going to be attacked and should do nothing about it.
Bend over.
Ahhhhh...so, is this still governance by poll for CNN?
We hit Iran, and hit them hard...because they neither accept or understand diplomacy. For those that rule by the gun, only undersand the gun.
this poll is all over the place.
but generally speaking, the american people have in no way been prepared for what military action against iran would entail.
Put Kerry in charge. He has a PLAN, and he was in Vietnam!
80% think Iran is going to give nukes to al-Qaeda to destory the US and Israel, but only 36% says we should stop them. 69 percent said they were concerned that the Bush administration would be too quick to use military force, yet 67 percent were concerned the United States wouldn't act fast enough to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
In other words, the majority of people polled were idiots (they believe Iran will have nukes and use them on us, but don't want to use force to stop it).
"United States and the United Nations"
I'm not very keen on the United States and the United Nations being linked together with the word "and".
Silly polls. This is why we don't have mob rule.
But, you are right an attack on Iran would lead to violence across the Middle East, $150+ oil, and suicide planes into our bases across the Middle East as well as suicide attacks on our ships and a massive upsurge in violence in Iraq.
none of it makes any sense. mind you, I am in the minority of freepers, I don't favor a short term US first strike in iran, not yet anyway.
but that opinion aside, the answers to the questions in this poll, make no sense.
Polls published by the media aren't worth anything. Wrong sample size, wrong list, wrong response rate, wrong methodology, wrong timeframe, wrong analysis, wrong everything.
I noticed that also, makes no sense.
I don't favor a strike right away anyway either, I favor slowly over the course of months build international anger at Iran, deprive them of allies and slowly choke their country. Iran needs the world alot more then the world needs Iran inspite of what it thinks.
The US will be ready for a military attack on Iran and have the allies and the troops necessary in a year to a year and a half when we have a fully functioning Iraq Army that is fighting almost on its own.
West Wing. Josh Lyman quote.
well, if you express that sentiment on one of these threads - watch out. they were calling me an "islamic sympathizer" yesterday.
This statement would make no sense whatsover if not for the fact that Americans have been indoctrinated by foolish, appeasing liberals in our school systems, and brainwashed into believing that "multiculturalism" and "acceptance" are the answer to every problem on earth. Sounds incredible, but they obviously believe we can give Iran a group hug and love them into submission.
We will have to fight on too many fronts if we don't have enough Iraqi troops trained so we don't have to deal with the uprising that will occur in Iraq by Iran and their puppets like Sadr.
We will be in a good position to attack when we have several good allies like Britian aboard and we have the Iraqi Army in good enough shape where we won't have to fight on several fronts at once.
