Monday was supposed to be the big FEMA deadline when the feds would stop paying for hotel rooms to house hurricane evacuees. However, it appears many of those evacuees have received extensions until March 1, the day after Mardi Gras. But not all. 9 News caught up with a man who was losing his FEMA payments Monday, and said he didn't have anywhere to go.
FEMA did not grant Troy Forest an extension to pay for his hotel room at the Pines Motel on Airline Highway. "There ain't no more assistance," said Forest. "None. I'm just... outdoors."
Forest has called the motel home ever since he waded through floodwaters to evacuate New Orleans. He says he didn't know he could get an extension at the hotel through March 1. "This ain't right," he said, sitting on a curbside. "This ain't right, man. I don't have I.D. or nothing."
Sherrie Causim, Forest's girlfriend, said, "Even people... that have kids have to get out." She asked the managers to "have a heart."
But manager Dana Severio says evacuees are destroying the rooms. "FEMA says they're not responsible for the damages, but we can't rent a room once they tear it up."
Evacuee Denetra Coleman says it's wrong to blame the evacuees for damage to the rooms. "It ain't all what they said from the beginning about New Orleans people tearing the hotel up. No, they didn't. [The hotel] was like that when they came here."
Regardless, evacuee Sherrie Causim says the real mess will be on the streets once people in the hotels have nowhere to go. "The only thing it's going to do is create more stealing, more killing and more robbing in Baton Rouge. That's all it's going to do."
Manager Brent Severio told 9 News he's evicting two evacuees, including Troy Forest. The Severios say now they're going to check the I.D.'s of all of the evacuees staying in their hotel and then see if their name matches that provided by FEMA. If not, the Severios say they're going to evict those people, as well.
As for Troy Forest, 9 News gave him information to get in touch with a shelter, and Brent Severio was trying to get him a ride to Bethany World Prayer Center. But when 9 News crews saw him last, he still had nowhere to go and he wasn't in touch with his family.
Boo frickin' hoo, get a damn job ya'll whining freeloaders and do as the rest of us, WORK!
Not to be rude....but what has Troy been doing for the past 6 months??
How can someone not have ID? You practically need it for doing anything nowadays.
Cry me a river....
At least he's no longer a shut in, swilling Colt 45 and watching Oprah.
When did Katrina hit?
Why, they've been remodelling their hotel rooms!
Meanwhile, Pedro shows up here from his little swim across the Rio Grande...a week later he has a job and an apartment.
Pedro doesn't speak English, have valid ID, government re-location or FEMA cash assistance.
By now Pedro probably has a construction job in New Orleans..
hehe
"This ain't right, man. I don't have I.D. or nothing."
And makes enough to support himself and send money home to his family in Mexico!
Well if that's true, the I'm pretty confident you'll have 'lodging' soon, for 18 months to 30 years.
And now a few moral questions arise...Will society take care of those who refuse to take care of themselves? And will eliminating natural selection in this way poison our society?
All these weeks not only on the dole, but in free hotels as well. And they're still not happy.
Please understand, you freeloading whiners, that if you want to improve your lot in life, look in the mirror for help. Don't expect a free Colt-45-for-breakfast ride for the rest of your miserable lives.
Look to Condoleeza Rice, Lynn Swan, JC Watts, Clarence Thomas, Bill Cosby et al for your examples, and your inspiration. You'll gain your own self respect - rather, you'll earn it. And you'll be able to stand tall, as good a human being as any other on the planet.
Else you really will remain in the worthless and dehumanizing ghetto of public welfare, relegated to the fringes and worth only the contempt that society feels towards you.
Anything that is "free" or has the word public in front of it (public transit, public housing, etc) will always be misused since the users have no sense of ownership.
For cryin' out loud, it's been six months---what has he been doing to find somewhere to go and to "get in touch with his family". At SOME point, these folks have got to start taking some personal responsibility.
I have no idea how the system works, but has this guy done anything to change his situation in the last 4-5 months?
