Man found guilty of murder for stomping his son to death

The Associated Press

February 13. 2006 9:04PM

A man was found guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse Monday for stomping his 5-year-old son to death.

Christopher Bennett, 31, was found guilty after less than two hours of jury deliberation.

Bennett had pleaded not guilty in the death of his son Zachary, who died of a ruptured liver, a bleeding brain and broken ribs in April 2003. Bennett stomped him to death in their Key West home, authorities have said.

Bennett's sentencing phase will begin April 4 and the jury of six men and six women will recommend to Judge Leonard Glick whether he should get the death penalty or life in prison.

In Nov. 2004 the mother and great-grandmother of Zachary Bennett settled a civil suit with the Department of Children & Families for $160,000. DCF had placed the boy in the care of his father despite the man's long, violent criminal record.

A DCF report had said Zachary should never have been placed in the care of Bennett, who had an extensive criminal record that included 11 arrests for battery, domestic violence and selling cocaine.

That poor boy. I look at my kids and can't imagine the kind of barbarity that would lead to such a thing.

Ahhh, DCF and their wisdom. Yet, another child is dead and they buy their way out with OUR tax money.

How nice.

Oh this guy should definitely get life and not the death penalty. You just make sure everyone on the cell block knows what he's in for. If he's not dead in a week, he'll wish he was.

I don't get it either. Why was the child not given to the mother or grandmother?

BTW, he should ride the sparky.

No, punishment should fit the crime. I wear size 11's. He needs to suffer just as long if not more than that child did. Just imagine the horror of a 5 year old being kicked to death by his "daddy".

I really would love to believe that child molesters and child murderers are really treated worse in prison than other types. But I really doubt that they are, from my perspective, all I can tell you is that prisoners simply care about themselves.

Truthfully I think that "special" treatment for child molesters is a myth.

Razor cuts to the eyes, bludgeoning, slow dismemberment/disembowelment, mental torture and starvation...all things that cause pain for just a mere blink of the eye compared to eternity.

This guy's already bought the ticket, he'll be taking the ride.

THIS is the case where they decide to buck the trend of bias toward the mother?

May this evil piece of clinton die in the same painful manner as that poor child.

Yeah, I think of that too.

I don't think I would have too much difficulty pulling off a quick worldly exit for this animal. (I've hunted & cleaned animals and that's all he is.)

I wonder about the extended torture - who's actually qualified/able to pull that off, and then, what to do about them.

Strap him into Sparky and launch him into the great beyond.

Hard to consider the damage he did to the little boy.
