From the night the Titanic went down until the latest emergency with Katrina, America's amateur radio operators have stood fast in time of emergency. When all else fails, they can stick a pin in a lemon, run a wire from that to a piece of germanium, and attach that to a coat-hanger antennae and they are in communication. WWII POW's were ingenious in making radios (and hiding them.) Kudos to them all.
