Muslim countries seek UN resolution to shield religions
A proposal by 57 Muslim countries says that the “defamation of religions and prophets is inconsistent with the right to freedom of expression”.
Beirut (AsiaNews) – The world’s 57 Muslim governments are making good on their word. After announcing their intention to have the United Nations ban mocking religion, they are now pressing to include such a ban in a planned new UN human rights body. According to the text of the Muslim countries’ proposal, the new body should strive to “prevent instances of intolerance, discrimination, incitement of hatred and violence arising from any actions against religions, prophets and beliefs which threaten the enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms”. In a clear reference to the Muhammad cartoons controversy, the proposal says that “defamation of religions and prophets is inconsistent with the right to freedom of expression”. To achieve this goal, Egypt for example is trying to persuade the European Union to support the ban. After talks with EU foreign affairs chief Javier Solana in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Aboul Gheit said the proposal on banning defamation of religions was discussed. Al-Azhar Sheikh Mohammad Sayed Tantawi, Sunni Islam’s highest religious authority, told Solana that that the resolution should include “sanctions” that deter. Solana refused to say whether a resolution would be presented to the General Assembly, but noted instead that a mechanism is under study that would reconcile the principles of a common declaration made by the EU, the UN and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference.

Isn't this exactly what the clerics did when they took the previously unnoticed cartoons, added some additional material to the mix and displayed them prominently until they got the response form the masses and media that they were looking for?

Additionally, the UN doesn't care that Muslims, in the name of Islam and Allah, destroyed two 1400 year old statues of Buddha in the Afghan hills. Or that the UN ignores the fact that Islamic nations frequently dishonor other religions by forbidding the practice of those religions within their borders.

Now that the statement has been corrected, it appears to me that ISLAM must be outlawed since it is the epitome of "intolerance, discrimination, incitement of hatred and violence."

Islam has to outlaw criticism of the koran, mohamed and its entire ideology, because it can not survive if the TRUTH is exposed.

The TRUTH is the TRUTH. Preventing people from saying it, doesn't change the facts. Islam is opposed to individual freedom and human rights do not exist within that ideology.

The only chance Muslims have to achieve freedom or human rights, is for them to be freed from the bonds of slavery. And let there be no misunderstanding...Muslims are slaves to islam.

If islam taught the truth, or was truly Holy, it would have no fear of criticism or exposure.

The TRUTH shall never be silenced!

I think the US should take the bait under the condition thta they add a whole host of freedom of religion provisions concerning the sale of holy books, desecration of holy places, persecution on the basis of religion, intermarriage between members of different faiths, the right of people to convert to any religion of their choosing at any time, the right to prosletize to members of other faiths, etc.
