A Day in the Life of President Bush (photos): 2.15.06

The president went to Dublin, Ohio, to attend a meeting on health savings accounts. Al Hubbard, Director of the National Economic Council, answers questions on this topic on "Ask the White House."

Brit Hume interviewed the vice president today about the hunting accident; the conversation will be on Special Report, Fox News, at the usual air times tonight. The vice president called the day of the hunting accident "one of the worst days of my life." Harry Whittington is doing "extremely well" a day after he suffered a minor heart attack, doctors said. He is sitting up, eating, and doing some work while remaining in the hospital.

Mrs. Bush spoke about women and heart disease during a visit to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

There are some late photos from last night's Valentine's Day dinner at the White House.

These pictures of Vice President Cheney really capture his deep sorrow.

More so than the interview did.

You could tell Cheney meant it when he said that ultimately he was responsible for what happened. Now that he's had a few days to think about it, and know that Whittington has suffered, and what could have been, it really has set in on him. As he said, he'll never forget the sight of Harry falling to the ground.

Thanks. I hope you find the right guy (pun intended) too. I believe it will happen some day. Only God knows when.

Cheney is one of the few deeply honorable men left in Washington. It's a city that sours people, but Cheney has maintained his basic integrity.

I got the impression as Cheney was answering Brit's questions re the press corps / press response frenzy that he held back words about the way the atmosphere in DC infects and distorts the people who buy into it wholesale.

He really is a set-apart character in that swamp.

Hiya navynm, you're welcome. If it weren't for this thread I wouldn't have a very clear idea that the president did anything except deliver State of the Union speeches once a year.

Excerpt from Brit's interview of the VP today:

Q What about just coming out yourself Monday/Tuesday -- how come?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, part of it obviously has to do with the status of Harry Whittington. And it's a difficult subject to talk about, frankly, Brit. But most especially I've been very concerned about him and focused on him and feel more comfortable coming out today because of the fact that his circumstances have improved, he's gotten by what was a potential crisis yesterday, with respect to the developments concerning his heart. I think this decision we made, that this was the right way to do it.

Q Describe if you can your conversations with him, what you've said to him and the attitude he's shown toward you in the aftermath of this.

THE VICE PRESIDENT: He's been fantastic. He's a gentleman in every respect. He oftentimes expressed more concern about me than about himself. He's been in good spirits, unfailingly cheerful --

Q What did he say about that? You said, "expressed concern" about you -- what did he say?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, when I first saw him in the hospital, for example, he said, look, he said, I don't want this to create problems for you. He literally was more concerned about me and the impact on me than he was on the fact that he'd been shot. He's a -- I guess I'd describe him as a true Texas gentleman, a very successful attorney, successful businessman in Austin; a gentleman in every respect of the word. And he's been superb.

Q For you, personally, how would you -- you said this was one of the worst days of your life. How so?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: What happened to my friend as a result of my actions, it's part of this sudden, you know, in less than a second, less time than it takes to tell, going from what is a very happy, pleasant day with great friends in a beautiful part of the country, doing something I love -- to, my gosh, I've shot my friend. I've never experienced anything quite like that before.

It must have been dreadful for him and obviously is still affecting him. Thankfully he has a supportive and loving family

I agree and that is why the press and his political opponents attack him so viciously.

Oh how I wish, when this has all blown over, that he could plant that
boot in the hindquarters of a few White House correspondents.

Nor I. I'm going to read the whole interview because they didn't have time to show it all.
