TURIN, Italy - American Johnny Weir has been catching a few glances at the Winter Olympics. The Delaware resident was wearing a red warm-up jacket with C-C-C-P on it during a practice session today.
Those are the Cyrillic initials for the former Soviet Union.

I wonder what the coverage would be like if he showed up with a swastika on his jacket; would we be reading lines like "I just admire the German culture during the Third Reich and how organized and efficient they were...when I was little I even learned to write some German words in the old Gothic style..."
Stalin murdered at least 100 million people - probably more - in engineered famines and by literally working them to death in the gulags. The Soviets committed unspeakable atrocities in their invasions of Czechoslovakia and Afghanistan, to name just two countries where they spread their misery.
But "CCCP" is still the height of 'cool'. Sickening.
In all fairness to him, if he was born in 1986 he'd be too young to remember the Soviet Union (scary thought) and I doubt his teachers ever explained to him he evil of it.
On the contrary, his teachers likely told glowing stories of how great the Soviets were.
Very true!!
Disclaimer: I AM an old cold warrior, and have no confidence in Russia's "Putin Democracy". But my then 15-year-old daughter was there two years ago to help start a Christian church and tour the public schools there with her Christian choir (something she can't do in the USA). So, I guess I'm a "soft" hard-line cold warrior.
Now, if the guy goes off into a Socialist-unity political rant, or wears the CCCP jacket on the podium, I'm gonna have to pull out MY OLD uniform, and go after him.
SFS
OMG. (Sob!) OK, I'll just go off and shoot myself now...
Maybe one of the Russians or Latvians or Ukrainians or Poles will by the ahole a clue...
Tres kewl, you know.
The Idoit said in an interview last night that the "Red South" my not care for the way he acts. I started to laugh and say who in the "red south" cares about Figure Staking. This is the prebuzz for The 500.

Looks like a typical "men's" figure skater.
What's he doing still on the team?
Be funny if some old timer Polish judge would slap him silly.
Yeah he also made a crack about " the Republican skating establishment". Right there was enough for me to be rooting for anyone else to win.
Weir? I thought his name was Johnny Queer...my bad!
The kid's just looking for attention.
Making a big deal about it just plays his game.
Russian jacket doesn't bother me. He 'worships' Plushenko and Russian skaters in general. So it's no more than a fan thing.
What IS disturbing is his 'flaming' personality. He admits to being a 'princess'.
Great- our main male skater is a diva 'princess.'
He makes Rudy Galindo look macho.
I love ice skating- even tho the females are boring to watch for the most part. And yes, I know there have always been gay figure skaters - it's just that I'm not used to the 'gushing' and open affectations.
Weir is a talented skater, and he hasn't admitted to being gay, but boy does he come across that way!
Yeah, I suspect he probably isn't consciously endorsing the old Soviet Union. I hope not anyway. It just makes me angry that people wear symbols like "CCCP" and the hammer and sickle as if they were some sort of fashion statement. Go tour a major college campus sometime and see what I mean. In a just world (ie one where the left didn't control academia and actually taught the truth about the Soviet Union) those symbols would be as universally reviled as the swastika.
Johnny Weird...
I bet he's seen Brokeback Mountain a couple of times.
What Would Brian Boitano do?
I'd pay a dollar to see that!
Bet he shows up right next to Cindy Sheehan the next time she hits the road because she's feeling neglected by the media.
This useful idiot would of been a lamp shade back in the old Empire.

If I were his coach he'd be playing his game at home in front of the TV set. He's supposed to be representing th United States isn't he?
Weir is a freaking MOOOOORon. I really hope his fate is medal-less and endorsement-less.
Doesn't anybody remember the 2000 democrat convention logo?! It had a line drawn across the middle of the 0's. Looked just like the CCC. My husband thought I was being funny. Problem is, I wasn't.
Yeah, I know. And to think I never thought I'd see the day when operations and bowel movements were common topics of conversation. Consarned kids these days don't even remember the Austro-Hungarian Empire...
This is the same "dude" who said he "felt like the prettiest
flower on the pond" during the Olympic trials.
I would have been his fan if he had on that Italian t-shirt with the prophet bomb head.
An insult to the American athletes who were unable to compete in the Moscow Olympics...
Fluffing.
hes here hes queer, i mean Weir.
His swan outfit put me over the top with the red-gloved hand which was supposed to be a beak!
Exactly.
He probably had the jacket in 1992 or got it from an athlete who did.
The jacket had USSR written on it not Stalin, quit over-reacting.
You're being like those folks who insist that the confedreate flag is racist.
Teachers? What teachers, dude?
He actually named the beak Camille. I'm not sure if that's funny or horrifying. I am sure that he's so uber-flaming, it's a small miracle the ice doesn't melt under his feet ;)
Just out of curiousity, did Stalin like gays?
BTW, the US skater who refused to skate on the team relay team and stated that he didn't care what people thought of him...should have been immediately sent home on the first plane out of Italy.
I doubt Stalin would've liked them any, since they gave out medals for women having 6-10 children. Higher rank the more they had.
I disagree. If he admires Russian culture there are plenty of ways to show it without using the "CCCP" logo. The familiar "POCCYA" hockey jersey is a very recognizable way, for example. The more I read about this guy the more I'm convinced he's making a political statement. I am very much not cool with people getting nostalgic about the Soviet Union and glossing over its brutality.
If you notice, all the judges keep fire extinguishers handy at all times in case Weir bursts into flames!
There are a few ways of looking at this. Wearing stuff belonging to defeated former enemies goes way back.
I have some Saddam currency pinned on my bulletin board. It's not because I like Saddam, it's a reminder of the brave fighting men who KICKED HIS ASS.
Ditto the CCCP.
I bet he could not even spell CCCP!
