From Arrival to Errant Shot, a Timeline of Cheney's Hunting Accident
New York Times ^ | 2/16/06 | RALPH BLUMENTHAL

Posted on 02/16/2006 7:21:28 AM PST by frankjr

The Secret Service, which put the time of the shooting at 5:50 p.m., said it had notified Sheriff Ramon Salinas III of Kenedy County by 7 p.m.

Sheriff Salinas said he had dispatched a deputy, and he later issued a news release suggesting that the officer had been turned away at the ranch...

Sheriff Salinas did not return repeated calls, and a reporter seeking to resolve the discrepancies was turned away Wednesday by the sheriff's office in Sarita, which said he was "unavailable."

Ms. Armstrong said she knew nothing of any attempted visit by a deputy on Saturday night.

Between 8 and 9 p.m., Ms. Armstrong recalled, Karl Rove, the president's deputy chief of staff, called her "to check on Harry," who she said was "an old friend of Karl's." She said there was no discussion of what President Bush had been told of the shooting and whether he knew that Mr. Cheney had fired the shots.

Ms. Armstrong and her guests insisted that the focus Saturday was solely on Mr. Whittington and that no one talked about whether or how to put out the news of the incident. "I'm telling you, there was no discussion at all, there wasn't," she said.

(snip)

Ms. Armstrong said she began calling the reporter, Jaime Powell — who had covered the death of her father, Tobin Armstrong, last October — about 8:30 a.m. Sunday but failed to reach her. Ms. Armstrong then started calling the Caller-Times newsroom and reached another reporter, Kathryn Garcia, about 9 a.m.

The Caller-Times, after confirming the story with Mr. Cheney's office, posted an article on its Web site at 1:48 p.m. Sunday.

Press Release

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department issued a statement today saying Vice President Cheney broke no law by shooting a lawyer instead of a quail over the weekend. A spokesman noted that lawyers are not considered game creatures, and are thus not subject to season limitations or bag limit. It was further noted that lawyer hunting was encouraged as the state is overrun with the pesky creatures. A local food critic said contrary to rumor lawyers do not taste like chicken, but rather like bovine dung which is a major component of their composition.

Thank you DollyCali..

Sheriff Salinas said he had dispatched a deputy, and he later issued a news release suggesting that the officer had been turned away at the ranch...

He never said that.

What he said was the Secret Service got in touch with him by cellphone within ten minutes.

Later, other deputues hearing of the incident, went to the ranch and the people at the GATE didn't know what they were talking about.

They weren't turned away; nobody knew what they were there for.

The sheriff told the Secret Service that he would come to the ranch at 10 the next morning, but Cheney asked that he come at 8 a.m.

It's all an elaborate Rovian plot to distract the American public away from W, who was at the time, dressed in his traditional SS uniform complete with Swastika, and dancing on the front lawn of the White house, while sucking the blood from kittens.

WHO GIVES A FLYING?

We'll have front-page stories on this for a month from the NYT, just like Abu Ghraib.

NYT what a joke.

This reminds me of the Augusta Golf story and Martha Burk.

The NYT had front page stories on that manufactured news, this in the same category.

At least this a change from the never ending Valarie Phlame, Guantanamo, WMD, and Haliburton stories in the press.

Thank God for Dan Rather, if he wasn't such a liar, we'd still be hearing about the National Guard.

Actually, I think it is more likely a MSM plot to distract the American public away from ABLE DANGER, where REAL news is being made, covered up and ignored.

He and Mrs. Whittington, Dr. Willeford and Mr. Hixon then made their own way about an hour and 20 minutes north to the Christus Spohn hospital in Kingsville.

Add that to this:

5:50 p.m While aiming for a quail, Cheney accidentally shoots fellow hunter Harry Whittington, striking him in the face, neck and chest with numerous pellets of birdshot. Medical staff, Secret Service agents and members of the hunting party administer first aid.

6:20 p.m. An ambulance transports the 78-year-old Texas lawyer to a nearby hospital in Kleberg, according to The Associated Press.

6:30 p.m. The remainder of the hunting party returns to the ranch house. White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card tells President Bush that there has been a hunting accident, unaware at the time that the vice president was involved.

7 p.m. After talking with Katharine Armstrong, whose family owns the ranch and who accompanied the hunting party, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove tells Bush that Cheney has shot Whittington.

Evening Cheney and members of the hunting party dine at the ranch, and sheriff's deputies who heard reports of an accident arrive to offer help but are turned away, the AP reported, adding that the Secret Service retracted an earlier statement that the deputies sought to interview Cheney.

8:15 p.m. Whittington is flown to a hospital in Corpus Christi and is treated in the intensive care unit, the AP reported.

Oh, FGS. NOWHERE is it written that the press must be notified about anything, anywhere, anytime. That anyone in power talks to them at all is a miracle considering their arrogance and ignorance. Everyone in the hunting party did exactly as you would expect them to do after an accident. They got the injuried person to the hospital immediately and notified the authorities. No one gave the media a thought and that is exactly the rub... the media discovered just how unimportant they really are to real people.
