WASHINGTON Helping promote Samuel Alito's nomination to the Supreme Court has paid off for three conservative lawyers, including a one-time confidant of former Attorney General John Ashcroft.
The three have prize assignments as Alito's law clerks and the opportunity to help shape his early days on the court. They also have resumes that could add some firepower to the junior justice's chambers.
Alito, 55, has surrounded himself with solid conservatives and loyalists all three clerked for him when he was an appeals court judge, dating back a decade.
Two of the new clerks, Jay Jorgensen and Hannah Smith, are previous Supreme Court clerks who traveled across the country as part of a public relations campaign on Alito's behalf last month.
The third, former Justice Department lawyer Adam Ciongoli, participated in so-called "murder boards," mock sessions that got Alito ready for his Senate confirmation hearings.
Earlier, Jorgensen was among the conservatives who raised questions about the credentials of Bush's early court nominee, Harriet Miers. When Miers withdrew in the face of conservative criticism, Bush turned to Alito. Jorgensen also prepared a paper for the Federalist Society on the nomination of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a liberal member of the court.

Do these clerks get paid well for their talent or does it have to be a labor of love and history for them?
The libs will cringe when I say Roberts is more Conservative than Alito.
Ponder that one.
Then think about liberal rage.
Then have an ice cold Killian's Red.
Sometimes law clerks become Chief Justice.
terror comes in threes... for liberals.
Yeah, but a lot of them get very weathy in private practice rather than go for public service.
Seems they are in it for the love of being part of history, that is just my guess anyway.
Renquest was more conservative the Alito yet still gave us Kelo.
Rehnquist,-O'Connor-Thomas-Scalia all voted the right way on the Kelo decision.
Or in the case of Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham they become conservative Uber-babes and media superstars...
Law clerks for judges get paid peanuts comparatively speaking. However, most clerks only clerk for one year. After there clerkship is over, they have tons of offers from great firms because a lot of firms want someone with "inside" knowledge of the court.
Don't think Ann was a USSC clerk.
Oops...brain lock. She was a appeals court clerk...
