Allstate and ex-worker settle online-essay suit
By Michael Higgins Tribune staff reporter Published February 17, 2006
A Villa Park man who claimed he was fired from Allstate Corp. for writing an online essay that denounced same-sex marriage has settled his lawsuit against the company, ending a legal battle that caught the attention of religious conservatives nationwide.
Neither J. Matt Barber, 36, a born-again Christian, nor an Allstate spokesman would comment, but lawyers for both sides appeared Thursday before U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve to report that the case had been resolved. The terms were not made public.

Rape-A-State is a rip off.
Best move I ever made was to drop them.
USAA is the only choice.
Iactually like the Gecko.
they have a GREAT warranty for your car you can include in your insurance.
He got cash, but won't say how much.
How much do you think it is?
$300,000?
"USAA is the only choice."
I was fortunate to marry someone who is USAA-eligible. Our auto insurance premium for three vehicles is less than what I was paying Allstate for two vehicles before we married. When I called the Allstate rep to cancel, he asked me to give him a chance to keep our business, and inquired about the competition. When I said USAA, he paused, congratulated me, and said he wouldn't bother to work up a new rate quote because he knew he couldn't beat them.
Just going by Mike's nom de plume here on FR, he should be USAA-eligible (not sure if its just limited to officers anymore).
Allstate is the absolute worst. I see more lawsuits for denying legitimate claims against Allstate than any other insurance company. You can pay your premiums like clockwork for 10 years and the first time you make even a minor claim they will try to screw you. Be warned.
Damn, I was hoping he would not settle without a legal finding of wrongdoing by Allstate; but of course Allstate could afford to force the case into continuous costly delays, making one lone-man's case cost more than he could afford.
I just want all you Illinois Freeper to know that Jim Oberweis hired this fine man as his DuPage County campaign coordinater. I work with him regularly as an Oberweis Southern Cook County field rep and I know him as a great guy and a principled conservative. He was a pro boxer who has sparred with Andrew Golata so he knows all about fighting dirty, even though he himself is as clean as a whistle.
Their price is good, but their service is the best. Always. No exceptions. I'm a 19 year member.
