...well said in your comment #9. Here are a few links.

There were only about 1,700 Jews in Serbia and Montenegro--only
~ 0.02% of the total population of 10,552,000 in 2002 (Sergio DellaPergola, "World Jewish Population 2002", American Jewish Year Book, 102, New York, 2002. The Department for Jewish Zionist Education web site).

Found this about the murder of the founder of the Serb-Jewish friendship society. Thought you might find it interesting.

Milosevic Ally Found Killed

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) --

An ally of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic was found beaten to death in her Belgrade apartment, media reported Friday.

Initial police findings indicated that Klara Mandic, 57, the founder of the Milosevic-backed Society of Serb-Jewish Friendship, was killed during a robbery attempt and her apartment set on fire, the Politika daily reported.

Mandic was also close to Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic. He and Milosevic are the Balkans´ two top war crimes suspects.

Police discovered Mandic´s body at her home in one of the capital´s suburbs late Thursday after neighbors reported gusts of smoke from the apartment.

There was no sign of a break-in, and police did not say whether any items were missing. They did not say why they thought it was a robbery attempt. Mandic was last seen grocery shopping Thursday evening.

Born to Jewish parents at a concentration camp in Italy in 1944 and later orphaned, Mandic was adopted in Belgrade by a Serb family. After a career as a dentist, she ventured into politics and became close to Karadzic and Milosevic.

Karadzic, a psychiatrist and aspiring poet, reportedly dedicated a poem to Mandic, which he often recited in public.

In 1990, Mandic helped found the Society of Serb-Jewish Friendship, though her role in it was viewed with suspicion by the local Jewish community. She also worked to help restore diplomatic relations between Yugoslavia and Israel, severed in late 1960s by the Communist regime of former Yugoslav dictator Josip Broz Tito.

With the fall of Karadzic, Mandic withdrew from politics but continued to champion Serb nationalist causes. Her murky political connections also tied her to Dafina Milanovic, operator of one of Serbia´s largest pyramid schemes.
