I have been following this story @ http://www.france-echos.com (french analog of FR - if you can believe that) since it broke early this week. This is the first english coverage I have seen - thanks for posting. There are millions of french people who want to see the death penalty reinstated because of this case.
They had this poor guy for nearly a month? He was just found sometime last week, still barely alive. Horrible.
France (and Europe) has a recent history of ignoring and denying a tremendous increase in hate crimes against their Jewish citizens by Muslims. It began with the second Intifadah. Such crimes reached record numbers post WW2 and have largely been ignored in France (and Europe).
