ROCHESTER, N.Y. Feb 19, 2006 (AP) Utility crews worked Sunday to restore power to thousands of homes and businesses from Michigan to Maine following a weekend winter storm, while slick roads and heavy winds were blamed for several deadly accidents.
As far south as Texas, ice and freezing rain canceled dozens of flights over the weekend at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, including 85 American Airlines flights, according to a company spokesman.
Little Rock, Ark., had a Sunday morning low of 18. Farther west, Alliance, Neb., bottomed out at 8 below, the National Weather Service said.
In the Upper Midwest, the 8 a.m. reading of 2 below zero at Duluth, Minn., combined with 17 mph wind for a wind chill of 23 below.
A reading of 18 below was recorded in Allagash, Maine, while temperatures dipped to a low of 10 degrees in Rochester and wind of up to 17 mph made it feel like almost 10 below zero, weather service said.

Winter in Iowa.
When I was living in Iowa in 1957. We had a week in winter when night temperatures went down to 26 or 27f below zero. Daytime temperatures did not go above 21 below.
When I moved East we would have winter temperature a little below zero and in the 0 to 15 range. It has not been getting that cold for the past decade.
Come on.
"W" can't have all the fun.
God saved some for himself! ! ! !
LOL! And here I thought my family were the only ones (that looks funny.. English grammar is annoying :P) crazy enough to think 20-30F was balmy! Back in Nevada, it wasn't unusual for night-time temps to hover around -5 to 15.. from about late October to March-April. Brrr. No wonder I'm a blanket hog :P
But here in Washington state, we've been having what feels like a cold snap - wouldn't be surprised if the current temp was around 20.. In fact, I'll check... Hm, I was close. 25F. Still cold. Rather warm, comparitively, but I'm rather a bit too sensitive to cold for my own good. As proved by the eight or nine blankets I have on my bed. Hey, I said I'm a blanket hog, didn't I? Hehe.
It was nice and warm Saturday - went to water my grandparents dog and kept stopping in the patches of sunlight and wanting to curl up like a cat cuz it felt so nice. Mind you, it was rather a bit more frigid in the shadows. Of course, I wasn't wearing a jacket.. for which over-sight (under-sight, perhaps? :D) I called myself an idiot. Oh well.
Personally.. I rather doubt we'll ever be fully able to predict coming weather for any amount of time beyond perhaps a 50-70% accuracy rate until/unless we somehow learn planet-wide climate control. But that's rather a bit too much out of a sci-fi book for my tastes, thank you very much. Oh well, guess I'll just have to continue hogging the blankets. :D

That sounds British but I like it.

That's cold.
I can see you read only what you want to read.
You might of miss the part where 3 feet of snow no longer falls on the Northwest.
Hmmmm. Try "State of Fear", by Michael Crichton.

Since I lived through the global cooling mania of the '70's, the we'll all be dead from famine by 1990, your right, I tend to ignore chicken little and junk science.
By the way, why can't we raise crops in Greenland like the Vikings did? And what does Little Ice Age Mean?

Have a nice day.
I don't understand your point.
I make a point that the climate changes.. warms and cools... and you come back at me with the same thing.
Are you confused?
When I was a teen in the 80's, I remember we had a few days like that.
There was some event that I wanted to attend one Saturday night (I don't even remember what it was) but it was thirty miles away in rural Iowa. I was SOOO mad at my Dad because he told me it was too unsafe for a group of teenaged girls to be out driving around in those temps (before the days of cell phones).
I just told my husband about that incident the other night, and said "Boy, was I an idiot for arguing with him!"
Won't you join me for a cup?
Cheers!
