IRA Pledges Peaceful Pursuit of a United Ireland

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams says that Irish Republicans plan to avoid a return to violence in their pursuit of a united Ireland.

At his party's annual conference on Saturday, Adams told delegates in Dublin that the IRA's decision to end their armed campaign last July brings new responsibilities for the movement.

He acknowledged some party members believe the IRA made a mistake in renouncing violence. But he seems firm with the decision.

"I have made it clear from the Republican perspective that the war is over. No one should harbour the notion that the Republican struggle can be advanced any further by an armed campaign. This leadership is firmly opposed to such a departure."

This is the first address by Adams to the party conference since the IRA announced it was giving up armed campaigns to pursue its goal of a united Ireland.

That decision followed two IRA cease-fires lasting more than a decade and marked a significant milestone in efforts to reach a lasting settlement between Irish nationalists and British unionists in Northern Ireland.

Sinn Fein is the IRA-linked party backed by most Catholics in Northern Ireland and Adams is reputed to have been a leader of IRA fighting factions, a charge he has repeatedly denied.

Talks to establish a power-sharing government between Sinn Fein and unionists will resume outside Belfast on Monday.

Unionists have rejected previous similar efforts because of Sinn Fein's links with the IRA.

When people ask me why I hate the French, I tell them, "if you don't already know, telling you would not help."

When people ask me why I hate the Irish, I tell them for two reasons: Catholicism and the IRA. If you want to be a citizen of the Irish Republic, walk your A-double-S across the Ulster border and apply for citizenship--it's that simple--and no innocent persons get hurt. How's that for a plan?

The fact that there is any terrorist organization in a Christian country is a travesty, but when one looks to the Inquisition, the Crusades, Slovakia in WWII--well, let's just say not everyone who calls themself a Christian, or who thinks that they are one, is one according to Scripture...

Why, If you think yourself as Christian, would you openly say you hate French and Irish? BTW, I'm Irish and I'm married to a French woman.

History has passed the IRA by.

A united Ireland has little appeal to those in the Republic and would have little impact on the EU.

The IRA is just another tiny malcontent group in the EU like the Basque Separatists, Red Guard, etc.

Only the pure criminal element and the tracing of their loot rates higher in the newspapers than the greyhound race results.

re :When people ask me why I hate the Irish, I tell them for two reasons: Catholicism and the IRA.

I have Irish parents and I am also a Catholic, I also spent three tours of duty in North Ireland fighting the IRA and to a lesser extent their Orange counterparts the UDA and UFF.

Generalization is a dangerous thing to do.

Hear, hear - well said that man!

Now the IRA/Sinnfein (same thing!) claim to have renounced terrorism, I wonder if they will stop peddling drugs to their own communities, robbing banks and knee-capping local car thieves. . . .

Re-uniting Northern Ireland with Ireland seems a lot like re-uniting New Mexico with Mexico. Most of the people who live there simply don't want it.

I see that being a Pentecostal has obviously made you a very happy person. Your hate and ignorance are consuming you. How very Christian! I guess when you were reading your Bible, and interpreting it for yourself, you skipped over the passages containing the golden rule, love your enemies, and love thy neighbor as thyself.

Exposing you as a hypocrite is not enough for me, however. Now that I took the moral high road, I will come down to your level.

Anyway, you are a Pentecostal. Oh, I am going to have fun with you. Do you really speak in tongues, I mean, if we dropped you in any country on the planet, would you be able to converse with the local population? I will always defend my faith, but, you know that. You can obviously read my tag-line without looking up its meaning!

How about Salvation? Your Salvation must have been predetermined. I guess you can do whatever you want, and no matter what, you are already saved, huh? No need to do what Christ commanded, it does not matter, you were already chosen to be saved, and your actions won't affect it.

If you truly believe in God's grace, you shouldn't be so worried about the rapture. You know, hate is a very strong word. Better be careful, or you will be "left behind".

Heh, give me 10 Pentecostals, and I'll give you 10 different beliefs.

Well, that was entertaining. From experience, I find that Pentecostals are always the nicest of people. My grandfather was a Pentecostal, but thankfully, he swam the Tiber. I will pray for you, and hope that you will drop your hate. As you can see from my post, it is a two-edged sword. I do not hate Pentecostals at all, but when they attack me and my Church, I will defend it, by finding holes in the beliefs of the aggressor. BTW, I am an Irish-Catholic, and my first name is, *gasp*, Christian....

I will pray for and forgive you, and I hope you will do the same for me. God bless!

First of all, the overwhelming majority of Irish people hate the IRA, they are terrorist treacherous scum.

And what the hell is wrong with Catholicism? I hate bigotry.

Yes, they will establish a 32 county socialist dictatorship through criminality instead - think FARC with an oceanic climate!

Dear Malcolm,
Have you considered enrolling in counseling or therapy? There are 800 million Catholics out there. You hate 'em all, eh? Isn't that a lot of hate to store in one small mind?
