The city of Houston has the worst roads that I have ever driven on, so that taints Texas as having great roads IMO.

I can vouch for the Michigan roads. One foot deep craters can take out a tire. The state, counties, government entities triple patch the patches.

"How is it even remotely possible that Illinois is not on the list of worst roads?"
I, as a life-long native am very disappointed. We used to take top honors in both substandard roads AND drivers.

Because after they raise taxes, and realize they don't need to apply them to roadsd, they can spend them on other important things, like giving $$ to illegal immigrants. D'uh!

Never been to PA, but I live close to Missouri, and it should rank high. I-55 in the Missouri bootheel is ungodly.
Tennessee is properly identified as having good roads. I-24 and I-40, especially near Nashville, are smooth, well maintained, and traffic flows easily along them, evening during rush.

I don't think Michigan roads are all that bad. Some of our county roads are a real mess.

How they left out Massachusetts is beyond me. Me either. IMO, they follow California as the meanest of the bunch. Detroit is a close third. NYC traffic barely moves so who can tell?
The nicest - Cleveland. More than once I had people get out of their cars and direct traffic so I could turn where I want to. Horrible weather, great people.

The worst automobile drivers are in California, followed by Illinois and New York.
Don't know about CA and NY, but here in western Kentucky when we see Illinois tags we always give them a wider berth. A much wider berth.

My favorite stretch of road is I-70 from Colorado across Utah.

Whatever happened to the "Dixie Die Way" running past Ft. Know from Luisville? Would have been at the top of my list, closely followed by the Schuykill ["surekill] Expressway in Philly.
I think you mean the WK Parkway? yeah, it used to be ultra-suck, but it's gotten way better in the past four years. And it was never as bad as I-55 in southeast Missouri.

"If Virginia has some of the best roads, then why is the General Assembly bent on raising our taxes to deal with roads??????"
Well, if it's anything like Tennessee most of the money is being stolen by paving contractors and funneled back to the pols under the table.

Because the survey is long distance truckers. They like to avoid NoVA. So their ranking is based on other roads in Virgina.

Take away I-5 and the west coast states have the worst roads overall. IMO anyway.

I agree worst drivers are in Illinois and I would also rank their roads up their with the worst! Especially up near Chicago, it seems like 1-2 years after a road has been fixed its totally destroyed again.

Drivers in East Central NJ are among the best in the nation, or so I've heard
My dad tells me that the very best drivers he's ever seen are blacks living in South Carolina. They're polite, they use their turn signals, and they never cut you off.

Re PA the reason is that the countys are not involved with fixing roads and the State can't do the job well for intra-regional roads.
