When it comes to roads that beat and bang you up, Pennsylvania leads the nation. That's the word from the annual Highway Report Card survey of over-the road truckers conducted by Overdrive magazine.
What is so wrong with the highways and byways of Pennsylvania? The top complaints are the conditions of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, I-78 and I-80, as well as poor signage.
The states with the worst roads are: 1. Pennsylvania 2. Missouri 3. Louisiana 4. Michigan 5. California
The states with the best roads are: 1. Texas 2. Florida 3. Tennessee 4. Georgia and Ohio (tie) 5. Nevada and Virginia (tie)
The worst highway in the United States is: 1. I-10 in Louisiana 2. I-44 in Missouri 3. I-95 in New York
The best highway in the United States is: 1. I-75 in Florida 2. I-40 in Tennessee 3. I-10 in Texas
The most improved highway is: 1. I-40 Arkansas 2. I-80 Pennsylvania 3. I-30 Arkansas
The Overdrive survey not only ranked roads, but also the drivers who traverse them. Roughly two-thirds of respondents say road rage increased during the past year, with 36 percent calling the jump significant. The worst automobile drivers are in California, followed by Illinois and New York.
Ohio among best roads??? That surprised me. Although I'd agree PA is worst.
Richmond ping.
Ammunition for your General Assembly reps to NOT RAISE TAXES for roads!
i live in pa and can't imagine any other state's roads being much worse.
I've never driven in Ohio so I wouldn't know from personal experience. I definitely agree about PA.
How they left out Massachusetts is beyond me. And Upstate New York drivers are far better than those in the metro NYC area.
I will admit Ohio's roads have gotten better the last few years, but I didn't think in any way we'd be in the top five. The Ohio Turnpike, especially, has improved.
PA Turnpike is just horrible though.
Pennsylvania has a 3.07% income tax, a 6% sales tax, an 18% excise tax on booze, and a ton of toll roads yet the state still never has enough money to build quality roads.
Before I read the article I'll opine that Penn should be the worst. Now to the article.
Whatever happened to the "Dixie Die Way" running past Ft. Know from Luisville? Would have been at the top of my list, closely followed by the Schuykill ["surekill] Expressway in Philly.
Kalifornicate should be in 1st place for the WORST roads, not 5th place...
It criminal what they call "roads" here....
I've seen cattle paths that were smoother.
Semper Fi
Don't forget New Jersey drivers - they are the worst of the bunch!
I cannot believe that Michigan is not in the bottom five.
Coming back from out of state, you can always tell when you hit the Michigan line... "thump, thump, BUMP, thump, thump"
I-80 in the west of Pennsylvania is great. Yes, I said great.
But in the Poconos, it's a nasty-ass crumbling joke.
How is it even remotely possible that Illinois is not on the list of worst roads?
We have a pay-to-play governor who's in bed with the road building and pro-ethanol mandate lobbies.
oops... there they are on the list.
I knew they had to be.
I'm surprised Virginia made #5 in that survey. Our roads are pretty good, but I've seen better (Georgia, for one). And Ohio made #4? What are those truckers smoking?
Where Virginia does need work is Interstate rest facilities. There's stretches of I-81 where there's 110+ miles between rest areas. And what rest areas there are, compared to other states, are horrible; small, cramped, dirty, falling apart.
But they need to squeeze us for $4 billion to pave over yet more of the DC suburbs. Right.

Can you say MAFIA?
