BOSTON Former Red Sox and NBC television broadcaster Curt Gowdy died at his home in Florida Monday, after a long battle with leukemia. He was 86 years old.
Gowdy's family was with him at the time of his death.
He was the radio voice of the Red Sox from 1951 to 1965. That time included his famous call of Ted Williams' final home run in his final at-bat at the end of the 1960 season.
Gowdy left the Red Sox to join NBC Sports, where he was the network's lead television broadcaster for it's baseball game of the week. From 1966 to 1975, he called the play-by-play for every World Series and All-Star game for NBC.
In his long career, he also announced Super Bowls, NCAA basketball championships and the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
He also spent two decades as the host of "The American Sportsman".
Gowdy was named National Sportscaster of the Year three times.
He joined the writers and broadcasters wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984.

Wow. He was a part of my youth; a voice of a generation of sports fans.
I'll never forget his call of Hank Aaron's 715th home run. I've got it on cassette-recorded it "live".
God bless Mr. Gowdy and his family.

I remember him best from when he "called" the olympics, back when they meant something.

There was something about listening to Sox games on the AM radio at night with my Grand Father at summer camp at Winnipesaukee. The announcers would take turns going to the TV broadcast when televised or both be on the radio when it wasn't.
To this day, I love sitting out on the dark patio on a clear cool summer night, as long as there is a breeze to keep mosquitoes at bay, and listen to baseball on radio. The present Sox announcers have kept a tradition that Curt started for me of carefully painting a picture of the game through the radio theater of the mind.

I am definitely NOT a Red Sox fan or even knew he did their play by plays...
...but I did know him as the host of The American Sportsman. The show that galvanized my love of the outdoors.
Thank you Curt (from a Yankees fan)

"Boy, how many can remember the 'The American Sportsman'?" I do. Being a mid Westerner, that was my introduction to Curt Gowdy. It was a great show and one I couldn't wait to see each week.
God's blessings on his passing and to his family. We're missing a fine man.
