Hopes of a compromise deal on Irans nuclear programme faded yesterday as Russian and Iranian negotiators ended two days of talks with few signs of progress.
Russia wants Iran to move its uranium enrichment work to Russian soil to allay Western fears that Tehran is secretly developing a nuclear bomb. Iran refuses to accept the condition that it should reinstate the freeze on uranium enrichment on its own territory that it broke last month.
Both sides agreed to continue their discussions when Sergei Kiriyenko, Russias atomic chief, visits Iran tomorrow, but diplomats said that that left little time before a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency on March 6. That meeting could start a process leading to Irans punishment by the UN Security Council.
Russia is building Irans first nuclear power plant and stands to lose billions of dollars if sanctions are imposed on Iran. President Putin also hopes to score diplomatic points by defusing the crisis in Russias first year as president of the G8 group of leading industrial powers.
By the time anything is done, Iran will have a nuclear weapon.
I though they walked out when the Iranians saw the pigs flying.
Russia is wasting time and money negotiating with this regime. Putin, get used to the idea of regime change in Iran and flip the switch on these guys. You stand to make more on the flip side of regime change than what youre making now. Go ahead P, crunch the numbers! Youll see how quickly things will smooth out when rational Iranians hold the reigns of power in Tehran.
The dog and pony show ends. Big shocker.
The Euros will be the one's to pay for this mess they have created...not the US.
It's not in the US's stategic interests to attack Iran right now.
North Korea is a bigger threat to the U.S.
I am trying to understand why Iran is so motivated to move their nuclear program forward RIGHT NOW in such an URGENT manner.
If you think Iran obtaining nukes won;t hurt the US you are dreaming. They are already killing our troops in Iraq.
Iran is not going to hit Iraq on the first try with the US there. That would be suicide. They are going to go for Israel. They are controlled by insane Islamic fundis trying to be Heros/martyrs for the Islamic cause.
And guess what..most of the surrounding countries won't give a care. Even the ones to the north.
That is one point. Another is that it was the Russians who moved WMDs out of Iraq and helped the regieme cover it tracks on WMDs.
Now that Russia has failed, it may be time to ask about their involvement in the above.
