Police: Your Black Muslim Bakery worker acted as a lookout in attacks

OAKLAND — A convicted burglar already in custody on a parole violation has been arrested as the eighth suspect in the vandalizing of two West Oakland liquor stores in November, police said Monday. Police said Elijah Allen, 33, also known as James Watts, will be arraigned Wednesday in Alameda County Superior Court on at least four criminal charges, including vandalism and false imprisonment. Police said Allen, like the other seven suspects arrested to date, was employed at Your Black Muslim Bakery. Sgt. Dom Arotzarena said Allen has admitted his involvement in the Nov. 19 invasion and subsequent vandalism of one of the liquor stores on San Pablo Avenue. Allen is seen on a store surveillance camera tape acting as a lookout inside the store while other suspects did the damage, Arotzarena said. He did not admit to being at the second store targeted that night. Allen has been in custody at Santa Rita county jail in Dublin on a parole violation since Feb. 1. He had been on parole for a 2002 second-degree burglary conviction in Southern California, authorities said. Police have said the attacks on the store were led by Yusuf Bey IV, 20, the heir to the bakery empire. The reason, they said, was the store sold liquor, a violation of the tenets of Islam. Police said they are still seeking a ninth suspect in the crimes. Besides the charges in Oakland, Bey faces prosecution in Solano County for fraudulently obtaining a luxury car in Vallejo last Nov. 15 by using someone else's identification, authorities said.
