WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Dennis Hastert wrote to President Bush on Tuesday asking for a moratorium on an Arab company's takeover of operations at six major U.S. seaports.

The Illinois Republican also asked the Bush administration to conduct a "more thorough review" of the deal allowing state-controlled Dubai Ports World of the United Arab Emirates to manage the ports. Hastert warned further that it "may require additional congressional action" to make sure Americans are protected.
Dear Speaker Hastert:
Pursuant to the powers vested in the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government under Section 5021 of the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act, which was passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, my administration has reviewed the proposed Dubai Ports World acquisition of P&O Ports and has determined (pursuant to Section 5021 of the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988) that the proposed acquisition does not in any way threaten the national security interests of the United States.
Also pursuant to Section 5021 of the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988, I contend that you and your fellow self-aggrandizing members of Congress have no freakin' idea what the hell you are talking about.
Sincerely, Your Friend . . .
President George W. Bush
P.S. Enjoy the hunting trip with Dick Cheney. Since you'll probably have a lot of free time as your recover afterwards, perhaps I'll have my people stop by your hospital bed and explain exactly what Section 5021 of the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 means.
P.P.S. What part of the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 (Section 5021) do you not understand?
"More people tend to vote emotionally, than logically."
Yeah, true, but this is another fast burner propagated by emotion, it'll be a dead issue within two weeks.
Dubai is a hotbed for illicit activity in the black market of nukes. Says it all.
And probably we will be reminded of it, at election time...over and over.
Iran, UAE explore expansion of trade relations Tehran, Feb 2, IRNA
Iran-UAE-Trade
Iran and UAE explored here Wednesday ways of expanding bilateral trade relations.
Iranian Commercial attache in UAE Qassem Mirzaie told IRNA that the meeting focused on expansion of trade ties between Iran's Mazandaran province and Dubai.
The meeting was attended by over 50 private and public officials of the Mazandaran province who discussed removing hurdles in expansion of investments and trade relations. Mirzaie who is also the head of Iran Trade Center in Dubai said that the UAE official stressed that the Iran-UAE trade exchange which stood at dlrs 3.3 billion in 2005, should be increased through holding trade exhibitions.
And I don't trust a country that supports suicide bombers families.
Hooper is also on record claiming CAIR receives no "support from any overseas group or government." But land records revealed in the book "Infiltration: How Muslim Spies and Subversives Have Penetrated Washington" put the lie to that claim.
It turns out that an anti-Israeli foundation run by the crown prince of Dubai owns the very deed to CAIR's headquarters located almost in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol. The foundation has held telethons to support families of Palestinian suicide bombers.
Yeah, I know hard decision...Schumer against it, Carter for it. There might be some manipulation going on by the Dems to put key people for or against this just to "stir up the pot," so to speak.
What part of "The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land" don't YOU understand? It trumps ANY other law.
And when the UAE buys fighter jets from us ... they insist on them having enough fuel capacity to fly to Tehran and back ...
The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the authority to set the rules and regulations for oversight of U.S. properties. They did set the rules and regulations (as I've pointed out here a number of times on FR), and the Bush administration followed them to a T in this case.
Sorry, I think Mr. Hastert is in favor of amnesty for the illegals. No help there.
Because you don't understand the power of the Constitution. It trumps all other law. AND your premise that Bush controls all is false.
Just for fun, let's use history to show how wrong you are.
FDR signs a deal with Japan that they can lease Pearl Harbor. They bombed their own assets and Congress would have no recourse? Do you REALLY believe that? That Bush can sign off on ANYTHING and there are NO checks and balances? You need to read the Constitution.
Hugh BS. If Pakistan isn't way bigger and way more dangerous in the nuke piracy business, I'll eat my hat, which looks and tastes like cherry pie, just in case.
bttt
It would be much easier to find a sympathizer within an Arab company than within a Western or Asian company, don't you think?
This is the testimony to congress. BS or no. Deal with it.
Pearl Harbor is bombed. 5 years later, FDR leases NY harbor and LA to Japanese interests in Okinawa. And Congress is helpless to stop it? I don't think so.
McCain supports it. Do yoiu say the same thing about him?
LOL!!!
Congress would always have recourse in a case like this. The question is this -- what recourse do you think they would have?
(The Pearl Harbor example is a bad one in one crucial respect, though . . . Hawaii wasn't even a state at the time, so there would have been a legitimate question as to how exactly a Japanese attack on Japanese assets at Pearl Harbor represented a "problem" for the U.S. in any way.)
