I would ask him one simple question.

the UAE owns some manhattan real estate - no problem. however, suppose tommorrow the UAE tried to buy the WTC site from Silverstien? would our "tolerance" for middle easterners be such that we had to approve that deal to sell the WTC site to the UAE, would we be racists for not allowing that too?

the racism argument shows you that the proponents of this port deal have nothing left to fall back on, so they just call everybody a racist and hope to scare them off with that.

I have the utmost respect for the author.

I hope that many of the freepers will come around on this. As I said earlier, based on yesterday's posts, I thought I entered the DU.

Yeah I sat and listened to a talk given by Walter Cunningham of Apollo Astronaut program yesterday. He's an old school Marine in his view of the world. He said in a very nice way we are too worried about living risk-free and being safe. Of course his context was space exploration but it carries over to all aspects of our modern society. He made a funny comment about having the Mar crew manned by old men because they aren't coming back. This risk free desire is bs. It's un-American.

I call bs on that.
If they are in charge of port operations, then that leaves the door wide open for some "special shipments" from our friends in the ME.

that the administration didn't understand how upsetting this would be to people and assign a point person to explain all the details regarding the ports and now our one reasonably dependable ally in the region, the UAE, will be so upset with the reaction of Americans that it will turn them firmly against us.

I don't think it would have made any difference. The ones who are looking to scare folks, would have just continued to do so, and who would have gotten more of the press, the Administration, or it's opponents?

Boo-hoo-hoo. Get yer hankie, Monsoor. I can think of at least 3,000 reasons why Americans might be just a touch "islamophobic". Why not just open an express lane into the ports marked "Terrorists Only"?

How many Americans are killed each year in Japanese cars on the roads?

Should we stop Japanese cars from being imported?

After all, they are vehicles of death.

Islamic terrorists must be taking some joy in the fact that even after 9/11 the race card can still be deployed so effectively against political-correctness-soaked America.

So "Islamophobia" is a bad thin but anti-americanism causing you to attack and kill americans seems reasonable to this guy.

They are lucky it seems Americans are only being islamophobia and not doing business with muslims. My sense is that Americans are tired of the ME battle and wnat to go roman on the middle-east and they should consider themselves lucky.

The more xenophobic among us better hide their eyes, lest they go blind.

Yep, a lot of people who have been screaming bloody murder over this the last few days will have a lot of mud to wipe off when this is over.

THe main things I checked on where DPO reputation -- they are considered one of the top Port Authorities in the world. Does DHS keep control of security - they do. DO American Longshoreman continue working there - yes they do.

Add to all that that the UAE is one of our allies in the region, and possibly the most progressive muslim nation in the ME.

The attitude that Middle Easterners are all blood thirsty savages is really appalling to me, and a lot of very good FReepers have disappointed me with the kneejerk reactions the last few days.

Based on a recent poll, 86% of the people in the UAE already detest us. They are not our friends....no more then the Saudis (who fund extremist mosques and Islamic front groups in the US).

You think a port deal is going to make a difference?

Wake up, this IS a clash of civilizations.

The racist and xenophobe arguments are particularly ironic when some of us have Muslim friends and business acquaintances and still the see UEA thing for what it is -- an unacceptable security risk.

When the average American discovers that two of the 9/11 hijackers were from the Emirates, his antennae go way, way up...as they should

So are we supposed to reject any dealings with a country because two of it's citizens were murderous thugs? Sorry I don't buy it, we have our own share of homegrown murderous thugs; one of them blew up the Murrah building. Some people are just evil, and they are all over the world.

There's nothing wrong with being careful and taking time to check into the deal, but it's wrong to reject it simply because the company headquarters is in a Muslim country. BTW, is the UAE run by radical Imams, or by a government that is more secular in nature?

How many containers are inspected?
Who would be responsible for moving the shipments?
Who would likely have a good idea what would/would not be inspected, if they became owners of the company?

This is a stupid idea.

I have no respect for Dubai anyway because their God is obviously money -- it's not even Allah.
