that the administration didn't understand how upsetting this would be to people

It's hard to predict which non-issues people will get all stirred up over.

the last time the govt got serious about isolationism we saw CAFE standards on car mileage (Vega aluminum block anyone) 55 MPH speed limits and GAS RATIONING (based on the last number in your license plate). This was in the 70's. so keeping jacking your jaws about how the relationship is onesided and they dance to our tune. You like 18% interest on you home loan. Get ready when these folks tell us to stick our treasury notes up our nether region. I hear the last auction didn't go so great BTW. fun and games.

And yeah we do look like xenophobic a-holes.

Yep. An absolutely shameful episode for the United States Congress and, frankly, the stuck-on-stupid American people.

This issue was a no-brainer to understand it would get people upset.

Who would likely have a good idea what would/would not be inspected, if they became owners of the company?

Terminal operators don't have anything to do with what's inside the containers. They aren't the ones doing inspections or clearing shipments. Customs does that, nomatter who owns the container, the ship, the terminal, the dock... whatever.

The President did say he would veto Congress to get this done, correct? Understandable. Definitely not a populist President. Thank goodness.

It's not islamophobia, for that would be an "irrational fear."

What is the catchy Greek word for "rational distrust?"

The immigrants foist their culture on us to the extent that the American culture is quickly becoming a thing of the past and they use the word racists when a good American attempts to challenge the cultural metamorphosis resulting from their invasion. The tragedy is the fact that the racist card works. Warranted or not, once tagged as a racist death of ones credibility soon follows.

The reaction to this has been overblown, no doubt ... but rabid Freepers are not the only ones expressing concern:

Until they raise their standard of living you don't want free elections in most of these places.

In the UAE, the standard of living approaches that of the US. I have visited Dubai, Sharjah , and Abu Dhabi many times. The UAE is a modern, advanced country. Women can drive and alcohol is sold. There are Christian churches. The GDP per capita income in the UAE is $29,000.

Not really. It doesn't involve enemies of the U.S.

It would be quite comforting to look at everything within a monocular, however this is a prismatic world.

I look at the UAE in terms of many threads. They have gotten a lot of control over terminals in many places in the west. Couple that with the Dubais gold and commodity bourse, the gold dinar, and petrodollars that quite frankly are useful only as far as they are allowed to be spent by our government and you can see a strategy emerging.

There are other threads weaving through the ME and I don't like what I am seeing.

This goes beyond corporatist globalism. This is shift.

Of those nearly eight million containers, only about six percent get close inspection.

Another media manufactured lie.

Every container is screened before being loaded. 100% of them. Please dont just believe me either, go LOOK IT UP. Every single container is screened. The reason that 5, not 6% are inspected after shipment is because that is the number of containers that might be vulnerable to in-transit tampering based on what is contained in each container. Now, you might ask yourself how we would know what is in each container if we don't inspect them, right? We know what is in each container, and we better know, because we have to know where it goes when it arrives, do we not? These containers are x-rayed, scanned for radioactivity, drugs and other dangers by highly sophisticated methods.

The media doesn't tell you that, because your anxiety equals your viewer-ship. They also don't tell you that the port security is the job of U.S. Customs and the Coast Guard.

Now, those are facts. But like I said, you can find this information for yourself if you bother to look. Stop reading media headlines. They are not for the purpose of informing you, they are for the purpose of making money.

Whatever the UAE's policies in the pre-9/11 world (whether as home to A. Q. Khan's illicit nuclear network, one of three Taliban embassies, questionable banking practices, or as an alleged repository for Iranian-terror funds), Dubai's record under these young leaders in the post 9/11 world reflects serious and structural change in national strategy.

Well, that certainly allays my misgivings.

Why, in just 5 years, they have done a 180 on centuries of tradition, and that will absolutely, positively remain the new course forever more.

Phew, for awhile, I was worried.

You missed the point. Company owners would have access to inside information, and can pass that information on.

You cannot be blaming the 70s oil crisis on isolationism. You can't be serious.

OPEC retaliated against us for our ties with Israel.

Also.
http://www.house.gov/transportation/cgmt/03-13-02/03-13-02memo.html
The Customs Service physically inspects two percent of imported, and one percent of exported cargo. However, the majority of containers selected for intensive inspection are not randomly chosen. The Customs Service uses information from a database on shipping and trade activities called the Automatic Manifest System (AMS). Using a targeting system that operates within AMS, the Customs Service is able to pick out cargo manifests that appear unusual, suspect, or high-risk, for further evaluation. Although 97 percent of ocean manifests are filed electronically with the Customs Service, the advanced filing of shipping manifests is voluntary.

I don't know- are they being crashed deliberately in order to kill the passengers? An object has no intent- it takes a human hand to guide it, to make it a weapon. And the intent of Islamic madmen is clear- to use any and all means available to kill Americans.
Talk to me when you come up with a real argument. Til then, drop the BS.

Of course. And our energy and engineering firms are employing hundreds of thousands of people in high paying jobs to help develop their natural resources. We have friends in the region and we need to build on those friendships through economic relationships. You know, like China did with Iran on Monday.

People think why in the world does Russia help Iran build nukes. Iran is Muslim. Muslim rebels are killing Russians. How can Russia do this? They are historic trading partners just like gasp, China and the USA are historic trading partners. Wars come and go, political and religious fights flare up from time to time but these trade partnerships continue. Ditto China and SE Asia. When they aren't killing each other, they are enriching each other.
