I don't smoke, and rather like being able to go out to the bar and not come home smelling like a chimney.

Then stay the hell out of Wiggie's bar.

I don't smoke either, but it concerns me greatly that the anti-smoking zealots have so much power as to be able to tell private citizens what they can and can't do in their private homes and businesses in the spurious name of "public health".

Well I do smoke and rather like being able to go out to the bar with my smoking friends. Solution - allow the marketplace to dictate which bars do better - smoking or non-smoking! What right do you or anyone else have to impose your will on the owner of a PRIVATE business?

Stay out of Wiggies and you won't have to smell like smoke.

If you want a no-smoking bar, you are free to open one.

"I don't smoke, and rather like being able to go out to the bar and not come home smelling like a chimney."

Then frequent bars that CHOOSE not to allow smoking. You'd think the city owned the establishment; they certainly act like they own the place.

standard required disclaimer on all smoking threads: I do not smoke, and personally don't like to be where there is lots of smoking. However, I don't feel my interest overrides those of other patrons nor especially of the owner of wherever I elect to visit.

In short, it's not "your rights end where my nose begins" but "both our rights to take offense end with our choice to enter someone else's business."

Now places where people have no choice but to go, such as government buildings, are a different matter. I don't recall anyone forcing you or me to enter a bar.

And there's so much more room in them now. Why, you have your choice of seats.

Why not buy a bar then and make it non smoking?

Who's forcing you to go in there?
Go find a non-smoking establishment or stay home.

Good for you!

It's refreshing to see people on this board who understand that laws restricting freedoms and seeking to restrict private property ownership are a good thing as long as they mean the rest of us can do things we "rather like."

I've got a long list of things I "rather like" that the government needs to commit to law.

These business owners who resist smoking bans are simply not allowing the government to help them to make RIGHT DECISIONS!

"I don't smoke, and rather like being able to go out to the bar and not come home smelling like a chimney."

I'm not a liberal, and I'd rather not have my evening interrupted by stupid liberal statements, but that doesn't mean I'm ready to destroy the First Amendment. Unless you want the government coming into your home...your private property...telling you how you need to live, don't advocate that the government go into other people's businesses...their private property...and tell them what legal activities they can/can't engage in.

Did you have the guy arrested?

I mean the guy that put a gun to your head and forced you into one of those evil bars that allow smoking?

So go to a non smoking bar and let the rest of us smoke in peace. If it turns out the market forces are not strong enough to support nonsmokers at bars then start your own non smoking bar.

This business of the War On Drugs and now the War On Smoking is just nuts.
