In claiming "checkmate," GOP says health-care effort was political ploy
House Democrats on Friday effectively killed a controversial proposal that would have required large Colorado companies to fund health care for their employees - a move that opponents said unfairly

"Her hyperbole generator is in overdrive."
Her man works at Sam's. What do you expect? LOL.
--yep--typical Demo motormouth--
My extremely liberal father and I got in a discussion about this last night. I said that I think it's morally wrong for Walmart to make obscene profits and IF they are not giving most of their employees enough hours to get health care, they should rethink their policies. BUT that confescating profits of a corporation and GIVING it to someone else (employees or otherwise) outside the legalities of tax requirements was COMMUNISM. By Definition. He was FURIOUS at me.
Of course he usually is and claims I'm a Dittohead.
So, WalMart would turn into a business with 3499 employees (and maybe some contractors)?
Maybe it's just bad writing, but it sounds like WM would reduce the wages to cover the health care costs.
Somehow it has become the duty of companies to provide insurance coverage for employees. It's a BENEFIT, people!
They can do it or they can not! You can work there, or you can work somewhere else! Be free, people, be free!
>>> They can do it or they can not! You can work there, or you can work somewhere else! Be free, people, be free!>>>
That was my PRIME argument last night with my dad. When did the Walmart employees get notice from the gov that it was work there or jail? If enough people stop working at Walmart, they will be forced to up the ante.
If you take a $7 an hour job and by using the police power of the State to make it a $10 an hour job, anyone whose skills aren't worth $10 an hour isn't going to get the job. This kind of thing kills employment generally and opportunities for marginal, entry-level employees specifically. The people you're trying to help, by being so generous with other people's money, are the ones who will end up getting screwed. But what politician ever cared about that?
--and the corollary of all this is that if the government leaves money lying around,(Medicade) it will get picked up--
For a party that claims to represent "the little guy," the Dems sure don't want "the little guy" shopping at Wal-Mart.
Saturday morning WalMart Ping!!!!!!!
Let me know if you want on/off this list!
We had a rousing argument last evening about WalMart.........This one gent proceeded to call myself and another woman liars when we denied his claim that 99% of everything WalMart sells comes from China. He was not terribly comfortable when both of our husbands objected, yet he refused to apologize. I was sorely tempted to ask him if he wished to see the waistband label of my undergarments to prove WM does sell many items, including undergarments made in America.
But I maintained my decorum and did not.

Has someone actually crunched the #'s and came up with a % of what does come (everything WalMart sells) from the PRC?
Dear sandbar,
"I think it's morally wrong for Walmart to make obscene profits..."
What's an "obscene profit"? Is that a profit that shows a little too much leg?

Actually more like Fascism, but your point is spot on.
I believe you are correct.
I do not know exact figures, but guess the % is about right in line with just about every other retailer.
During my last shopping trip to WalMart all but one of my purchases was made right here. The only thing that was not American made was a software program and that came from the Czech Republic.
Dear Gabz,
Wal-Mart used to have that information on its website. I've looked it up myself, in the past. The last time I looked, I think the dollar volume of imports from China was around 9% of all cost of goods sold.
However, I was just looking at the Wal-Mart site, and I can't find that little nugget of information, anymore. It may be I'm just missing it, but it isn't where it used to be.

So how much of that goes to the PLA?
Dear happinesswithoutpeace,
I don't know. You'd have to ask them.
