Illegal immigration: Off the back burner (Minutemen impact OC elections)

Mike McGill has been walking door to door for his Assembly campaign, and while his election isn't until June, one thing has become perfectly clear.

"Home after home after home after home indicated that illegal immigration was the burning issue," the Republican said.

Diane Harkey, a GOP candidate in the April 11 special state Senate seat election, says it outpolls the next-highest issue by 5-1. She's sent out two mailers on illegal immigration. Republican opponent Tom Harman also mailed an anti-illegal-immigration piece this month.

Consultant Dave Gilliard, whose clients include four Orange County GOP legislative candidates, got a taste of the phenomenon in December's special congressional election, when he represented winner John Campbell in a battle that saw third-party candidate Jim Gilchrist get 25 percent of the vote.

Aliso Viejo's Gilchrist, who led the Minuteman Project citizen border-patrol effort last spring, ran almost entirely on an anti-illegal-immigration platform.

That forced Campbell to spend much of his energy convincing voters he too was adamant about the issue.

Gilliard has seen hot campaign issues come and go. In the 1980s and 1990s, crime was usually at the top of the list in Orange County, he said. Illegal immigration bubbled up in the early 1990s, culminating with the 1994's passage of Proposition 187 - a measure thrown out in court that would have denied illegal immigrants schooling, health care and other government services. By 2000, education was routinely the leading issue.

"Voters feel those other issues are being addressed," Gilliard said. Contributing to current passions over illegal immigrants are security concerns arising after the 9/11 attacks, calculations that illegal immigrants cost the state billions in services and incarceration costs, and Gilchrist's highly publicized efforts.

"There's no question that the Minutemen have driven the issue in the media," Gilliard said.

Is he or is he a lying politician?

Yes, he is.

Oh well, sometimes it's as good having 'em by the you-know-what's as it is havin' their hearts. Know what I mean? ;-)

Love the banner! The message is clear (and true).

I believe GWBush is the first U.S. President in history to allow foreign leaders to dictate our immigration policy.

These are sad days for America under Bush. Hopefully his insanity will wake up voters to the fact that America needs a strong "third" party that actually intends to enforce immigration laws and restore America's respect.

"I am so tired of our government and anti-Americans serving up our country on a platter to those who can't even make it in their own country. Something is wrong with this pic."

I read an article this week that said most of the Crimmigrants had jobs before they left. They just want higher salaries.
