Tenor Placido Domingo has been given a five-year contract extension as general director of the Los Angeles Opera. The 65-year-old Spanish opera star - one of the renowned Three Tenors - will now remain in his post until 2011.

Domingo joined the company as artistic director in 2000, before being promoted to general director in 2003.

He has been the Washington National Opera's general director since 2003 and is due to return to performing with the New York Metropolitan Opera next month.

I gotta see if I can get multiple jobs on different coasts, and see if the folks'll pay my commuting costs.

I always wondered why his parents named him 'Quiet Sunday'. Very odd for an Opera Singer.

Good tenor, although he usually tired in later acts. Fair director, LA Opera.
Not sure of his stance on pan-islamist throat cutting.

Here is a good [short] 1996 profile of the great Domingo, for those not in the know:

Dear onedoug,

I don't that much about what it means to be "opera director" but to me, it seems like a full-time position, no?

This guy is an actual performer, as well as being the opera director for two major outfits. Is he able to give it all he's got in every area?

I find it hard enough to do one job.

Maybe I'm just lazy. ;-)

Domingo is also a conductor and has been conducting Rigoletto at the Metropolitian Opera this month.

See http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/season/production.aspx?id=8422

An opera company "Director" in this case is the guy who has final say on the artistic matters that must be decided, like what opera to perform, who to cast, who will design sets, and is also involved in fundraising. He has a chief operating officer at both companies where he is the director to carry out the details of what he wants.

Dear Captain Jack Aubrey,

So you don't think he's just "mailing it in"? There's enough of him to spread around, here?

To me, it all sounds very demanding.

Your thoughts on Bocelli. Today the voice is Bocelli.....4 Tenors? The new kid on the block? Or the Tenor of this generation?

Domingo does not mail it in. He is energetic like nobody else. I am surprised he is not a composer as well as a conductor, singer and manager of opera companies.

Bocelli, unfortunately, in the words of Chico Marx: "He'sa no good."

These are some of the fine younger tenors thrilling audiences around to world today:
