The Nation -- So much for freedom of speech, let alone thought.
The play My Name Is Rachel Corrie, directed in London by actor Alan Rickman and due to open in New York City in March, has been canceled for fear of controversy.
The play adapts the diaries of the 23-year-old woman from Seattle who was murdered in Rafah in 2003, when she was deliberately run down by an Israeli Defense Forces bulldozer. Rachel had traveled to the Gaza Strip during the last intifada as an activist for the International Solidarity Movement.
My Name Is Rachel Corrie has enjoyed two sell-out runs in London at the Royal Court Theatre and great critical acclaim; it was due to open at the New York Theatre Workshop in the East Village.

The Nation -- So much for freedom of speech, let alone thought. To The Nation, freedom of speech should mean freedom from criticism.
And does anyone know the position of The Nation on the Islamic cartoon story?

It's self-censorship. Controversial plays are not unknown in New York. The off-the-record-type explanation is a mis-direction most likely.
Maybe they lacked funding.

she wast NOT "deliberatley run down by a bulldozer", she slipped and fell between the treads and the blade, which brushed against her and she died as a result.

Controversy? What controversy? I'm sure the blue staters in NYC would love the show. Maybe they're worried about Christian or Jewish suicide bombers?
I, on the other, think that Rachel Corrie got what she deserved. She was protecting a smuggling tunnel for terrorist's arms. I WISH the bulldozer had run over her deliberately, but these days the good guys are too squeamis to do what must be done.

when she was deliberately run down by an Israeli Defense Forces bulldozer.
And how far did that bulldozer have to chase her before finally running her down?

I haven't yet read an account where she was "deliberately" killed.
She was somewhere she didn't belong and got flattened. I feel more sorry for the buldozer driver.

Since when is running in front of a bulldozer murder. rememberTHIS you protesters, if you can't see the operator, HE CAN'T SEE YOU!
I remember years ago in the 1960's a group protesting segregation ran in front and lay down in front of a bulldozer. The operator backed up and ran over a "preacher" who had laid down behind it. I don't think the operator was prosecuted for murder!

Still, I think the play should go on. People have a right to put on whatever nonsense plays or movies they want to.
To: I am for Bush
In private conversations with those who staged the play in London, the Theatre Workshop cited the election of Hamas in Palestine, Ariel Sharon's medical condition and the furor over the Danish cartoons as reasons for refusing to stage the play.If my assumption that the play is pro-terrorist is correct, who are they afraid of? The Lutherans?
How is the American public supposed to develop a civilized understanding of what their government is bankrolling in Israel and Palestine when plays like this cannot be shown?
LOL!! These people really take themselves waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously!

Pretty easy to avoid being run down by a slow moving bulldozer - get out of the way! The fact is she was deliberately placing herself in the path of the bulldozer; thereby creating her own endangerment (intentionally or not) when the IDF operator could not longer see her. But then again, this IS the Nation and this bias is typical of the publication.

As someone who has operated a bulldozer (let alone an armored one) I can tell you that your visibility to the front (over the dozer blade) is very limited.
Only a fool would place herself in front of a working dozer.
