Girl recovering from shark attack at Maui beach

The Associated Press

WAILUKU, Hawaii — A 15-year-old Maui girl who was bitten on her right calf by an 8-foot gray shark remained in a Hawaiian hospital today and recalled the pain of the attack

"I really didn't think that I was going to survive this, because there was so much pain," Nicolette "Nikky" Raleigh of Kihei said at Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she continued to undergo treatment in the wake of Monday's attack.

"I'm feeling better but still in a lot of pain," she said.

Raleigh was at Big Beach near Makena, in South Maui, to celebrating the 17th birthday of her boyfriend, Shane Wilds, along with friend Jessy Larson, 15, when the attack occurred in shallow water. The shark knocked Wilds down before biting Raleigh.

"I just started screaming," she said. "I was like 'Get him off me.' And then I kicked him with my (left) foot, and Jessy pulled me out of the foot of water that we were in."

Raleigh received immediate care from a doctor, two nurses and two firefighters who happened to be at the park.

Raleigh's mother and stepfather, Cathy and Ken Johnson, said the ninth-grader at Kihei Charter High School may have to undergo a nerve graft.

Raleigh said she, Wilds and Larson were aware that they had been along the coast where the partial remains of Anthony Moore, 45, of San Jose, Calif., was found Friday. Moore had been bitten by a shark after going snorkeling Thursday, but preliminary autopsy results found he was likely dead before the attack; he had gone swimming alone from the Makena Landing and had been reported missing by his family.

The beach was closed by state officials after the attack but may be reopened today.

How are you dead before the attack? Heart attack? Drowning?

Although it is one of the most aggressive sharks, the grey reef shark will usually only attack a person when it is threatened. Even so, it has been responsible for 7 unprovoked attacks resulting in no fatalities according to the International Shark Attack File. This shark often shows curiosity and often approaches divers. If cornered or threatened is some way, the grey reef shark will display threat behavior explicitly. It will raise its snout, depress the pectoral fins, and arch its back while swimming with an exaggerated sway. If the threat continues, the shark will move with lightening speed, delivering quite bites prior to retreating. Although the bites are often serious, they are rarely fatal. This species of shark is also more likely to attack while solitary rather than schooling perhaps due to an increased feeling of vulnerability.
