Not sure what's worse: Elton John or Bad BBQ.

Hickory is the best you can get in this area. West Texas mesquite is tops but not readily available in Northeast Muddysippi. Pecan is good too but the smoke is really tough on your eyes.

Sweet Tea is all you need. Although I do have to admit that some Sweet Corn does set off a good plate of Ribs, collard's, and mashed taters nicely.

Be forewarned, I've ordered from them in the past, and they never delivered my product! After trying to reach them via phone and e-mail, I only got through a couple of times. Luckily, American Express opened a ticket, and refunded my money. 4 months after placing my order with America's Best Barbeque, I recieved my BBQ sauce order...with cracked jars...just in time for Christmas.

You've been warned.

That's easy, you can forgive the wife for dragging you to see Elton.

sweet corn's ok. Especially creamed corn. Back to Rudy's in Texas for good creamed corn. It's got whipping cream in it is my guess.

Cannot forget Wolf's BBQ over in Evansville on First Avenue. I last ate there back in November before Thanksgiving. I left Colorado Springs about 5am (Evansville time) on Sat morning, got to Evansville and got to Wolf's about 15 minutes before they closed at 10pm. Their buffet was closed so I ordered off the menu. It was pretty good. I have to admit, the buffet is not as good as an order from the kitchen.

Wolf's has been well known for years. I went to college at U. of Evansville from F'85 to F'89. I didn't discover the place until my Sophomore year when one of the guys in the dorm took me there. After that, I was hooked !

They sell their sauce locally there. I usually pick up several bottles when I stop and visit to take home with me. Their sauce is "thin" and it has some chili powder in it.

Recommend Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro, KY. Or try Dreamland (Ain't nothin like em - Nowhere!) in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Yeah, sure. List all the parts of Texas but the central part!

(sniff)

No kidding. There are several great BBQ places in Central Texas. I like the County Line on the lake. Sort of pricey, but they have great ribs. Mikeskas (sp) in Taylor is one of the better caterers. I love their sauce.

Elgin, Lockhart and several other small German towns also have some excellent BBQ.

Kidding aside, this guy talks about the sauces, but not another integral aspect of good barbecue....the marinade.

That and a good mop sauce to keep the BBQ from drying out during cooking.

Anyone here know what happened to "The Boardroom" in Kansas City? They had the best sauce...but now they're out-of-business. I've been trying to reach them...

You can adjust the amount of ketchup depending on cooking chicken or beef. Make a nice marinade.

sweet cornbread? I confess I like sweet cornbread if it's got corn in it.

If it's got cheese or jalapenos, I like it without sugar.

the pot of chili I made last weekend included black beans, tomatoes, and...and...and mushrooms. Horrors!

That's the great thing about barbecue or chili. They leave lots of room for individual tastes AND individual 'moods'.

----------

but will not succumb to sweet barbecue sauce, or sweet potato salad or sweet slaw, or sweet mayonaise.

I like all those foods like I do my accents...thick and SWEET!

----------

Only sweet ice tea!

I grew up drinking tea that way, but after spending a few years out of state, I got to where I like it unsweetened better.

My Mom had more fun pickin' on me about my 'Yankeefied' taste in tea.

:-)

I like Dreamland.

But Archibald's, in Northport, beats it by far. The best sauce I ever got outside of, and the ribs are almost perfect. Woodrow's (owned by the same family and with the same sauce) is also great. But avoid Archibald's and Woodrow's on Highway 43. It's good, but it's not as good as the other two. I cannot comment on Archibald's 2, as I haven't eaten there since they moved from Cottondale, but they used to be excellent.

Found this in a search: Taking their name from Dewey Phillips’ legendary WHBQ Memphis radio show of the 1950’s, the first Red, Hot & Blue opened in 1988 in Arlington, Virginia. The rhythm-n-blues-n-bar-b-que-bistro was the brainchild of four Washington, D.C. businessmen, including former Tennessee Congressman and Governor Don Sundquist. Lee Atwater was also among the original investors who helped turn the Red, Hot & Blue idea into reality.

As Atwater has been dead for nearly 15 years, it has, as I said, been a long time since I was there, but their food was pretty darned good.

I don't think I've ever had the misfortune to run across it yet - thankfully. The only acceptable sweet spread I know of is jam for toast (and even then it's still iffy - I'd rather use my toast for moppin' up runny yolk.)
