This article makes it sound like the students were protesting that the teacher was put on leave. FoxNews reported, though, that the students were split. About half were protesting that he was put on leave, and half were protesting that he made the comments.

Personally, I do not think teachers should be using public money to conduct partisan brainwashing. Partisanship ought to be as illegal as proselytizing religious beliefs in public schools.

Notice also the bias, "criticizing the President". Somehow, use of the word "criticizing" is simply not appropriate to rhetoric comparing Bush to Hitler.

"About half were protesting that he was put on leave, and half were protesting that he made the comments."

Probably more like thirds, with the last 1/3 just wanting a day off.

I'd tell the "protesting" students to get their asses back to their desk or risk suspension themselves.

Some students chanted "teach, don't preach."

Burning HOT topic here in CO. Too bad this guy doesn't have tenure, because he should have thought about it before he quit his job.

And 100 percent of them wanted to be part of something "significant" while getting to skip class at the same time.

In the tape, the teacher is heard saying there were similarities between remarks Bush made in his State of the Union address and "things that Adolf Hitler used to say."

I'm wondering what any of this has to do with geography. This teacher should stick with teaching the subject which he is supposed to be teaching, and leave his political rants at home.

It's this kind of thing that makes me think the entire public school system ought to be declared unconstitutional. I have a right to free association, and to raise my kids as I choose. I don't want these idiots brainwashing my kids with public money. And you can't have a policeman in every classroom to make sure they don't. The only solution is vouchers. Let me have the choice of where to send my kid.

From the excerpts I've heard on the radio today, it sounds like the teacher is a wanna-be liberal talk show host who doesn't have a show, so he uses his classroom instead.

Of course most of the crap this guy was saying has NOTHING to do with geography.

I stopped listening to his rant after he claimed that the capitalist economic model destroys human values, since people only work for greedy motives.

If the dickbag hates capitalism so much, why the hell pay him? Just tell him can drink all he needs out of the water fountain and hand him a scoop of the people's rice.

I'll second that.

It is getting to the point that homeschooling is the only way to go.

Interesting set of goals for a GEOGRAPHY class:

Course Goals

1. Critical and creative thinking
2. Critical reading
3. Spatial Reasoning
4. Effective writing

That's what I thought. His attorney was on OReilly a minute ago claiming that this class is about "human geography" and therefore includes such topics as the problems that people in Iraq face.

We walked out in protest too. Over some kids being suspended and not allowed to go to the prom.

Kids today don't realize that you're supposed to wait for a nice spring day before you storm out in faux outrage.

Probably more like thirds, with the last 1/3 just wanting a day off.

That's what I was thinking, too.

Also, I can't understand why some teachers make comments like this, when it's so easy to say something like: "Some people may think XYZ, while others think ABC." Whatever. You don't have to say YOU believe 1,2,3. It's really not your job to say what YOU believe -- it's your job as a teacher to present two points of view and let students exercise their critical thinking skills as you lead them in a discussion. But saying what YOU think is a turn off to every student who does not agree with you, and to others who now conclude they do not have to think anything through, since you, the teacher, did it for them.
