UAE buys British firm that runs U.S. military facilities

WASHINGTON — The United Arab Emirates intends to operate U.S. military factories.

The Bush administration has informed Congress of a review of the UAE acquisition of a British manufacturer of engine components for U.S. military aircraft and main battle tanks. The British firm operates nine factories, including military production facilities in Connecticut and Georgia.

Officials said Dubai International Capital has acquired the London-based Doncasters Group for $1.2 billion. Doncasters produces engine components and turbine blades for military platforms, and its clients include Boeing, General Electric, Honeywell and Pratt and Whitney.

"It's a standard business deal by a consortium that seeks opportunities," an official said. "But it also fits in well with Dubai's plans to create an aerospace industry."

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States completed a standard 30-day review and last week decided to extend the investigation for another 45 days. Dubai International is part of Dubai Holding, the third-largest shareholder in DaimlerChrysler.

Otherwise, you may have noticed, the leftwingnuts (and some people on the right who ought to know better) have opposed Dubai's involvement in American business.

Remember, Dubai is serving as our main base of operations in the Middle-East. The Islamofascists and the professional anti-semites on the left will do anything they can to sew enmity between the USA and UAE because that will hurt our military posture and endanger our troops in the field.

Maybe its just me, but I seeing a pattern that just isn't sitting well. It's one thing if, say, they bought 100 Pizza Hut and McDonald's franchises in the US, but port operations and now US military manufacturing?

The headline says it all: just as Dubai was never going to "oversee security at" or "run" American ports, neither are they going to be running any "military facilities". Deceptive inflammatory headline = Dan Rather School of Journalism.

Hmm. Reading further, that's not the case at all.

"Fool me once," etc.

I love how Republicans are all for free trade, as long as no A-rabs are buying anything.

Close enough.

I love how you make a broad generalization.

Some Republicans are true capitalists in the Adam Smith-Milton Friedman sense.

Some Republicans are true mercantilists in the Adam Smith-Bail-Out-My-Bankrupt-Corporation-So-I-can-use-my-golden-parchute sense. (Airlines, banks, S&Ls, Chrysler, etc.).

Most Republicans don't have a clue what they are and don't know the difference between capitalism and mercantilism. They would want to know which group is pro-life.

The UAE aren't Wahabbists. Everything else you say could easily apply to almost all Muslim states.
