Less than a day after the website FireDavidGregory.com launched, it has collected nearly 1,000 signatures for a petition calling on NBC to fire its chief White House correspondent.
As of 1 p.m. Saturday, the petition had 905 signatures. The petition is addressed to NBC Chairman Bob Wright, and it asks that he “immediately fire Mr. Gregory or ask him to resign.”
As HUMAN EVENTS first reported yesterday, the petition was inspired by two recent incidents involving Gregory that made him “part of the stories he is supposed to cover.” The petition says, “This is not the proper role of a journalist, especially someone as powerful of Mr. Gregory, who covers President Bush and the White House.”
It cites Gregory’s antics at the White House—calling spokesman Scott McClellan “a jerk”—and his recent interview with Dom Imus when he laughed uncontrollably, prompting Imus to question if he was drunk.
“These two episodes illustrate serious breaches in journalistic integrity,” the petition says. “Mr. Gregory has done damage to NBC News' reputation and the reputation of journalism as a whole. Journalists should report the story, not become a part of it. Mr. Gregory, who was unable to control his emotions at a White House press conference and behaved inappropriately on a nationally syndicated radio program, is unfit to work for NBC News.”
Sorry, the link doesn't work but I do remember Jessica during her hey-day. But I didn't realize her struggles until I saw a TV movie made about her.
This man is an alcoholic, did imbibe, felt free, overcoming inhibitions when calling McClellan a jerk.

NBC firing Gregory? No way with their shortage of reporters.
Expect him to humbly admit a personal problem, go for detox and return as a cleansed hero who overcame dependency.
If David Gregory were an elected official, he would be facing a recall election. Or indictment for malfeasance of office.
He is definitely outta control.
If NBC News were a profit center, he would certainly have been canned by now. But NBC News is on a mission, and these public perceptions of reversals are acceptable collateral damage on the way to their objective, to drive George W. Bush from the White House.
But David Gregory is stumbling badly, and is about to fall down by his own self-inflicted damage.
Actually, Gregory sounded like something out of the Clinton gang, (definitely high on something), not the calm, collected and really civil Bush band.

Wow. I just retried your link, but whittled it down to the root and then navigated to the Savitch clip. I don't know about all the effects of coke, but this isn't what is usually portrayed on the screen. Her thickness of speech seems more like drunkeness or even a mild stroke. Here eyes look terrible. The site mentioned that her death occured 20 days after this broadcast and drugs were not involved. I wonder if there was some undiagnosed medical condition which would shed light on her tragic life. Poor woman.

Does anyone really believe that in the competitive business of network news, and while on a presidential trip, in the middle of the day, an NBC White House Correspondent would be drunk?
In the remote possibility that a professionally ambitious reporter like Gregory was on something, do you think he would still have his job 48 hours after the incident?
If there is anything, ANYTHING, to the story, why did Drudge take it down before the end of the day?
I happen to like it that Gregory acts like a jerk and a junk yard dog sometimes. We need more junk yard dogs. I suspect that W likes Gregory or he wouldn't have been on the presidential press plane for this trip.

Glad you eventually got the video to load. I watched the video again, and you're right -- it does appear/sound more like a mild stroke than drugs. From what I remember, Jessica died in a car accident (she was a passenger; not the driver). It is sad, indeed.
Gregory seemed stoned to myself and dozens of other FReepers on another Gregory thread.
He could be replaced by Stone Phillips.

We, the undersigned, are becoming increasingly concerned about the well-being of NBC News' Chief White House Correspondent David Gregory.
He has become increasingly ill due to Bush Derangement Syndrome and has turned to alcohol in an attempt to sustain this illness.
Imus just repeatedly accused Terry Bradshaw of being drunk. Wonder if it'll will make Drudge or HEO today?
