How do you define terrorism?

The Intelligence Community is guided by the definition of terrorism contained in Title 22 of the US Code, Section 2656f(d):

—The term “terrorism” means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience.

—The term “international terrorism” means terrorism involving the territory or the citizens of more than one country.

—The term “terrorist group” means any group that practices, or has significant subgroups that practice, international terrorism.

I wondered about that earlier today.

For a Muslim, Religious Revenge is the same as Terrorism....

The only possible difference being whether the violent act was coordinated and organized, or not. And once these like-minded individuals get together and start swapping stories, the differences evaporate altogether.

I agree with your post putting this all in perspective and your guess that this is likely to be a lone wingnut?

But, isn't "lone enraged Muslim launches murderous attack" pretty much the story as the murdered Dutch film maker, which was an earth-moving story in the Netherlands with major ripples across Europe and around the world?

"subnational groups or clandestine agents" I read as roughly "cells". Which is basically my point. I don't (yet) see any evidence of a "cell" operating here.

I take a backseat to no one in characterizing islam as the enemy within. And likewise with the attemps of the MSM to spin stories to their agenda.

I just see this guy as more like Holden Caulfield than mohammed atta.

I confess to not being up on all of the details of Van Gogh's murder other than that it happened in Holland and it was done by muslim(s).

I am not trying to say that this is an insignificant act. Far from it. Islam is like Naziism. If we have people coming under the sway of either warped ideology there are going to be acts like these and worse.

So it is significant.

I just don't see it as "terrorism" in the classical sense or as defined by the CIA.

The difference between Mohammed and Holden is that Holden, in the tradition of angst-ridden adolescents in this culture, did not consider mass murder as a solution to his ennui.

I think many of us sense that, while acting alone, the conflation of his personal issues with worldwide "disrespect" of Islam, is a mental error to which many young Muslims are prone.

I think (if memory serves) that there are some references in Catcher in the Rye to Caulfield's desire to take some people out in some way shape or form.

Couldn't agree more.

No difference.. Just a feel good sort of politically correct word corruption.

So now terrorism is too ugly a word- it's 'religious revenge'. Semantics will be the death of us all.

At first I thought it was merely a coincidence that he had a Muslim/Middleeaster/Arabic sounding name. Then when I saw the maniac grinning like a possum on the news, i was incensed. I think if this incident had happened at a more conservative school, he would have been lynched on the spot. He was lucky it happened at People's Republic of Chapel Hill.

Neither guns nor information, or knowledge are allowed if you're a student at UNC today per post #79.

It might grow legs if College Republicans could organize a FReep at the courthouse tomorrow.

Yea, especially if they just happened to be playing with a noose as a prop in their little street theatre! LOL (Not that I would condone or participate in such a thing but it ~would~ make legs grow!)

I agree.

And I wonder how many others are out there that we don't hear about.

If terrorism does not include as a subset "religious revenge" the whole War on Terror would be a fiction. Of course it's terrorism. The distinction whether this guy acted alone or with a group is semantical too. What difference would it make if someone is exhorted by Clerics to kill infidels, identifies with that group but then plans to do this singly instead of in league? It does make a police difference in unrolling who many others they need to pursue, but certainly it's possible to be a lone terrorist. And it's not like terrorist organizations have exacting standards for who can or cannot join their Jihad.

Of course it hasn't yet been established that it is a lone incident, only that there's currently no information to say others were involved. But how exactly did this guy come to rent an SUV on the very day in which the barricades were down, and they're normally up to prevent vehicles getting onto the Pit?

Nice to see this "moderate muslim" take off his drag outfit in the news. He was such a nice guy before he flipped his own jihadi switch, which is what they all have whenever they feel the urge to punish infidels. Nice of 'em, really..nice.
