My understanding is the cookies were first made during WWI and sent to the diggers abroad, hence the name 'ANZAC' (Australia New Zealand Army Corps).

Thanks! Amazing the history some of the small things have, really. I had also heard and read they were created from what supplies were on hand during the War - what was available during rations. Quite remarkable. Have a safe Anzac day, FRiend.
