Cheney: Iran Will Not Be Allowed to Have a Nuclear Weapon

Tuesday, March 07, 2006

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration told Iran on Tuesday that any enrichment of nuclear fuel on Iranian territory was unacceptable as Russia appeared to close ranks with the United States over Tehran's nuclear program.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice delivered the tough message — but shied away from warning of immediate U.N. sanctions — after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

At a joint State Department news conference, Lavrov said there was no compromise in sight with Iran. Russia has been negotiating with Iran and has proposed enriching fuel on Russian soil for Iran's energy need.

The International Atomic Energy Agency already has referred the Iranian nuclear issue to the U.N. Security Council, a move spearheaded by the Bush administration.

"We will see what is necessary to do in the Security Council," Rice said. She said there was still time for Iran to change its ways.

From the State Department, Rice and Lavrov were headed to the White House for a meeting with President Bush. Earlier in the day, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the U.S. expects the U.N. Security Council to move forward to rebuke Tehran for its disputed nuclear program.

"The international community has spelled out what Iran must do — that means suspend all enrichment activity," presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said ahead of President Bush's meeting with Lavrov.

Vice President Dick Cheney, meanwhile, said in a speech Tuesday to a pro-Israel lobbying group that Iran will not be allowed to have a nuclear weapon and warned that the issue may soon go before the Security Council.

"The Iranian regime needs to know that if it stays on its present course, the international community is prepared to impose meaningful consequences," Cheney said in a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

"We join other nations in sending that regime a clear message: we will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon," Cheney said.

I wish he would've said "sanction" instead of "allow," which sounds a tad condescending, doesn't it?

We can't upset the balance of power in the Middle East by allowing Iran to have nuclear weapons.

Wait a minute ...

Allowing Iran to have nuclear weapons WOULD balance the power in the Middle East since Israel already has nuclear weapons. What was I thinking?

Yeah, what were you thinking?

Remind me when the last time was that Israel threatened to nuke Tehran out of the blue, just for existing.

What's wrong with being condescending to a fascist regime?

I think Cheney should take that whackjob from Iran bear hunting so they could work this whole thing out.

We would'nt want the Vice President of the United States to:

"sound a tad condescending"

Maybe he should have gotten on his knees and begged their foregiveness. That way all the surrender monkeys and appeasement apes would be happy.

you are absoutely correct there would be superficial "balance" excepting shortlived as Iran would aggressively pursue israel and global islamic domination.

now, thats a good balance

allah willing

Does a country with nukes have to actually threaten others with them? They don't need to do that.

Why can't they just bully other countries, occupy land that isn't theirs, threaten to assassinate their prime minister-designate, things like that?

With all due respect sir, what are you going to do about it?

I say if they want nukes, we give them some. Delivery however might be something they are really not going to like.
