The Nazis looked pretty strong in the Battle of the Bulge, but in fact it was a last-ditch desperation attack. The enemy in Iraq is doing their own Battle of the Bulge - the increased desperation is apparent in their choices of targets and methods. Obviously IEDs aren't doing the job for them, even when it's Iranian military explosives.
