I have no idea what this means. I suspect it is delaying the take over of the US terminals as part of the P & O sale and NOT that they are throwing in the towel because other articles say they are not. (And in my opinion they shouldn't)

A committee in the house attached an ammendment to a budget bill that would prohibit any company with majority ownership by a foreign country that recognized the Taliban from 1996 to 2001 from running ports in our country.

There were only 3 countries that recognized the Taliban. They were Pakistan, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

After the 9/11 attack the UAE withdrew regnition of the Taliban and they aided us in tracking down members of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

In other words, the UAE has already done what they can to to make up for the mistake of recognizing the Taliban. The ammendment is being sold as a broad regulation that doesn't specificly target the UAE, but neither Saudi Arabia or Pakistan are major players in port operation, and the UAE has already withdrawn political recognition of the Taliban and helped in our efforts against them.

The mention of the Taliban in the ammendment is more of the same guilt by loose association and political rhetoric. This is another disguisting ploy by politicians to prey on the fears of the public that knows little about the facts of the case.

The UAE would be wise to divest itself from investments in a country where the government is going to change the laws to specificly ban them when they are working with us in the war on terror and they are apparently already going to pass the security review by the treasury department.

This stupidity is going to do significant harm our economy. It's going to put a lot of fear in the minds of a lot of foreign investors. It's going to cost a significant amount of Americans their jobs.

If there are real security issues, then the deal should be blocked on those grounds. However, that doesn't appear to be the case. Instead we have politicans playing short sighted political games with our economy. These morons need run out of office.
