The lack of craters is due to the active geology of the place (with water ice taking the place of rock, of course). Any craters get wiped out in a geologically brief period of time.

There probably were. Localized geologic activity erased them.

I noticed the same thing. That means that the area free of large cratering has been resurfaced since the heavy-bombardment era. Same as Europa.
