FBI warns of terror threat at sporting events
ABC ^

(3/10/06) - With college basketball championships underway around the country, the FBI has warned stadium operators of a possible suicide bomb attack at sporting events.

In a directive issued today, obtained by ABC News, the FBI says a posting on an extremist message board "advocated suicide attacks against sporting events as a cost-effective means of killing thousands of Americans."

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security say they cannot confirm the credibility of the threat or whether the message is affiliated with al Qaeda.

The FBI says the Internet posting said the suicide attacks would be justified because the United States refused a truce offered by Osama bin Laden in his last videotaped statement, Jan. 19, 2006.

Posting Suggests Using American Suicide Bombers

According to the FBI bulletin, the author of the posting recommended using "three to five blond or black American Muslim suicide bombers." The FBI says the author suggested homemade explosives be hidden under their winter clothing.

The posting recommended, according to the FBI, that one suicide bomber detonate inside the stadium and the others detonate at exit gates as spectators were fleeing.

"The combined explosions would create a panic that would kill far more spectators than the bombing alone," the FBI quotes the message as saying.

The FBI says it is unaware of any specific or credible plans to attack any sporting event but notes that terrorist groups have mounted attacks against sporting events in the past.

The FBI recommends that sports leagues and stadium operators review and coordinate security practices and emergency response procedures "to address this potential threat."

There's always someone who loses it, but most don't. However, if there is an attack like that there will be a lot of very annoyed people and several things will ratchet up both in the country and internationally.

This is not overseas. The problems usually come when some moron has chained one of the emergency exits closed, that is the kind of thing to look for. Panic should not be all that contagious.

Ya know, I'd really like to think that's true. And while some of the "peasants" may, politically we're a [w]ussie nation in that sense more concerned about not offending anyone than looking at simple realities and reacting according to them.

I suppose we'll see however. I will say this, I'd bet my 401K that there will be a "Beslan" here in the US within the next five, perhaps a few more, years, and how we react to that will be the telltale.

The movie "Black Sunday" was about 20 or more years ago. It was about a terrorist attack at a Super Bowl.

Black Sunday (1977), plot summary from IMDB:

A demented war veteran (Bruce Dern) plots to kill thousands of Americans at the Superbowl in Miami by using a specially designed dart-gun from the Goodyear blimp which flies above the stadium. However, a tough Middle Eastern (Israeli) anti-terrorist agent (Robert Shaw) has uncovered some of the plot and is out to stop him.

Well, it's not overseas... you are right.

But, AQ/friends MO says they would detonate one bomb, then detonate more as people are moving to the exits. Look at Madrid. I'm pretty sure those people panicked. I think it's pretty hard to assume that everyone will remain calm in a situation such as that.

Yeah, it could happen. The results would be a lot bigger than the 911 fallout. This country would go to war, and nobody should be surprised at how big and how fast.

It would probably be a Nascar event because of the pro military theme at these events...

Panic can be VERY contagious, if the deaths continue to occur over time. That's how I began my first novel, with a sniper firing from long range into the packed upper deck of a football stadium. If people in one area keep getting shot, one after another, they WILL stampede for the exits.

If the exits are down extremely steep and crowded stairs, the cascade effect can send folks right over the edge. This has happened in significant scale at soccer matches, just after brawls between opposing fans got out of hand.

Once the rest of the stadium sees folks going over the rails in large numbers, falling 100 feet onto other fans below, it's not too hard to extrapolate that the panic can become general.

It's an alert for Gonzaga fans yelling "BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN"

That amounts to terror for Dems as proven in the U-Grab al Arab prison.

It's bound to happen sooner or later.

I'm surprised a suicide bomber hasn't happened already.

Good find. The movie is 29 years old.

Surprised something like in the movie hasn't happened yet. I guess it is only a question of what day it will happen.

Some will panic, a handful here and there. But, most won't and some will go into combat mode even if they have never been in a combat situation before. Some are born with the talent and don't know it, there are some in every crowd. Most will be a little confused and hit the ground until they can figure out something better to do.

It's not a terrorist attack if:

If only one plane had been involved on 9/11, it would have been sold as an unfortunate accident.

We'll get more government. That die is long ago cast.

We would have to look at each situation. Indoor/outdoor, football/basketball, bombs/guns. Lots of variables.
