Kabul: A former Afghan president survived a suicide attack on Sunday in Kabul, a senior police official said.

Senior police officer Zalmai Oryakhel said the attack was aimed at Sibghatullah Mojadidi, who heads a commission aiming to persuade the Taliban to give up insurgency.

Mojadidi was being driven in a car heading towards the city centre when a pick-up truck drove near and exploded. At least two people, including the suicide car bomber, were killed in the blast.

Oryakhel said police suspected that an Al Qaida militant allied to the Taliban rebels had carried out the attack, which also wounded four other civilians.

Meanwhile, the beheaded bodies of two policemen were found dumped in a desert after they were kidnapped from their homes, said provincial administrator Ghulam Muhiddin.

Police have launched an investigation into the Helmand province killings, which follow a government campaign to destroy opium poppies that are used to make heroin.

Authorities suspect Taliban rebels – who have purportedly vowed to defend opium poppy farmers - get part of their funding from Afghanistan's thriving drug trade.
