Most germans did not know about it, or considered it enemy propaganda. Hitler controlled the press and radio.

You are right. I never knew how little German citizens knew about the atrocities until I read a book named Stella by a German Jew who worked in Berlin with several hundred other educated German Jews up until 1944. This was a well-connected bunch of people and they did not know about the death camps. Their relatives had been "relocated" east, and they did not hear from them because there was a war going on.

BTW, the Stella of the title was a gorgeous Jewish woman whom he attended school with who married an SS officer and became a Jew catcher. Amazing story.
