Sigh.

Who exactly are these people? After having seen steady progress in moving the country to the right over the course of my adult life, I am sitting here watching people ready to throw it all away over the lack of perfection. Instead we should be celebrating the progress we have made and shoring up the goals for the future.

I am really shocked, because I thought most conservatives had cooler heads than the opposition. But it all comes down to where left meets right I suppose.

Unbelievable.

Oh, and the guns concept...yeah, that's exceedingly rational and downright brilliant. (Insert eye roll)

Who exactly are these people?

Mostly the perpetually p*ssed off crowd.

In their mind, no one is conservative enough (except maybe for Pat Buchanan) so they'd rather see the country destroyed rather than it be run by someone who doesn't fit their criteria.

While they make lots of noise, they're insignificant as they don't vote or vote some fringe third party. The only place they are disproportionally represented is on sites such as this.

To answer your question "who exactly are these people" I quote the following:

With debate over immigration heating up in Washington, a Quinnipiac University poll released Friday found that 83 percent of immigrants or their children and grandchildren believe illegal immigration is a "very serious" or "somewhat serious" problem. The poll also found that 88 percent of all poll respondents share the same opinion. And it said that by 72 percent to 25 percent, U.S. voters oppose giving undocumented immigrants driver's licenses. "This poll reflects local concerns about immigrants gathering on street corners, waiting for jobs, or packed into illegal housing and the like," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Red state, blue state, and purple state voters agree: Illegal immigration is a serious problem." The poll, conducted Feb. 21 to 28, surveyed 1,892 registered voters nationwide. The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

Ummm, a steady progress to the right? What are you smoking and where can I get some? All I've seen a is steady progress to the left.
Today's 'Pubbies are where the Democrats were 30 years ago. Today's Democrats are Left-Central Euroweenie socialists.

Lack of perfection? Cut me a break. More like lack of any sincerity on the part of the Bush Admin to combat illegal immigration.

...celebrating the progress we have made...

What progress? You must live in a state that hasn't yet been infiltrated by illegals, and I think your Freeper name fits in this case. You are being ignorantly optimistic and foolish on this issue. I've lived in border states all my life (TX and CA) and things have gone from bad to worse over the past few decades. The only 'progress' that has been made has been by the Minutemen by bringing the issue to the public's attention and by the House, in passing the illegal immigration bill.

And as far a 'cooler heads' goes, what do you want people to do? Sit back and wait and wait for the politicians to do something while our cities in the south are turning into a 3rd world? It's so bad here in S. Cal., that we are looking into moving to another state where English is spoken! I think a grass-roots effort like what is happening now - and a huge shift away from the left-leaning Republican party - is the only hope for the fate of this country.

So the guns concept bothers you? It bothers me too, when I don't have one on me I am bothered greatly. You should really visit the border, you would gain a new perspective.
