New Iraqi Documents Show Bush Didn't 'Lie'
Newly translated Iraqi documents from Saddam Hussein's regime show that President Bush was factually accurate when he told the nation in his 2003 State of the Union Address that Iraq had recently sought uranium from Africa.
Bush's 16-word statement had formed the basis for the claim adopted by administration critics that "Bush lied" about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction programs.
But according to the Washington Times today, an unnamed U.S. official reports that "newly translated Iraqi documents . . . tell of Saddam seeking uranium from Africa in the mid-1990s."
The documents also speak of burying prohibited missiles, a government official familiar with the declassification process told the paper.
In his January 2003 address, Bush told the nation:
"The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."
The statement prompted former ambassador to Iraq, Joseph Wilson to complain to the New York Times seven months later: "I have little choice but to conclude that some of the intelligence related to Iraq's nuclear weapons program was twisted to exaggerate the Iraqi threat."
The new documents strongly suggest, however, that Wilson was wrong - and that the "Bush lied" mantra adopted by most Democrats since Wilson first made his complaint has been based on bogus information.
Confirmation on African uranium claim offered by Iraqi documents may be just the tip of the iceberg.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Peter Hoekstra told the Washington Times that about 500 hours of Saddam audiotape is still being translated and analyzed by the U.S.
And U.S. Central Command has 48,000 boxes of Iraqi documents, of which the military has delivered just 68 pages to his committee so far.
"I don't want to overstate what is in the documents," Hoekstra told the paper. "[But] I certainly want to get them out because I think people are going to find them very interesting."
"an unnamed U.S. official"
That guy plays on all teams, doesn't he?
Not one peep in the utterly deceitful, democrat party lamestream media.
" has been based on bogus information"
I gave no one information!
Dr. Bogus Pachysandra
Don't we already know Joe Wilson is a liar? What he said publicly contradicted his private report.
Maybe, that is why I was so disappointed to the White House apologize and admit they were wrong. Now, as the truth comes out, they look foolish again.
why does everybody leave out the first part? There was never any claims about firsthand knowledge - only that the British government has learned that Saddam tried to buy yellowcake.
How could he have lied when he *quoted* British intel?
Yawn, old news surely we can speak of more important things like uh,....the Sopranos? the NCAA? toenail fungus?
I can't wait to hear this trumpeted all across the MSM shows now thru Sunday!.......
I never thought that the President lied about WMDs.
Many would have been better served if he'd put up a more rigorous defense of the presence of WMDs and of Iraqi ties to a number of terrorist groups to include Al Qaeda.
Those most injured by the terrible media skills of the President's information team are the soldiers of the US military. They NEED daily to know that their sacrifice is the necessary thing to be doing for a just cause.
This'll never see the light of day in the OTM (Old Tired Media), IMO.
It is utterly amazing how a FALSEHOOD stated often enough becomes the truth. OR as in this case a true statement falsely reported becomes a LIE about a LIE.
What the POTUS said in his SOTU was the TRUTH. However the way it was reported was that BUSH SAID Saddam had tried to get yellow cake from Niger when in FACT it was the British government that said it.
Which by the way is EXACTLY what the President said.
The SOTU statement by the PRESIDENT was and always has been the TRUTH!!!!
"Well, unnamed officials are good enough for the NYSlimes."
Yep, exactly why I don't trust 'em.
This doesn't vindicate George Bush it should vindicate British Intelligence....
Bump.
No, they don't.
Well, this will be all over the news tonight, I'm sure!
That's what the fracas was all about.
Does he work in the same office as Katie couric's guy, "People are saying" ?
So MSM, will you cover this?
"Does he work in the same office as Katie couric's guy, "People are saying" ?"
Probably so. That guy gets around.
If not foolish, they are sending a message of weakness for letting liberals brow beat them into a false hearted apology when they should have stood on their convictions.
I always knew he didn't lie. Never doubted him.
No, they're not. Only to those who are ignorant. Behind the scenes they are fighting this thing thru Scooter Libby to take the media down further.
They are fighting the battles where it counts, not on the public stage where the MSM dominates. The WH is not in the business of entertainment.
The WH is very, very far from weak. They are winning and those who watch too much TV don't know it.
Didn't the 9-11 commission already show that it was 007 Wilson who was factually incorrect !!!!!

"I always knew he didn't lie. Never doubted him."
I agree with you 100%.
Tonight on Hardball with Chris Matthews, The truth has caused Chris to apologize for his rantings about the President.
I wish.......
The truth has been out there. Read the UNMOVIC reports yourself. Those that are blind will not see.
On the Dennis Prager show right now, they are discussing the translation of some of the tapes. The guy is not unnamed, he was a weapons inspector in Iraq, and Arabic translator.
Paging Joe Wilson. We hope you at least enjoyed tea time in Niger since socializing and dreaming up fantasy reports is all that was done.
Nor the Bush Administration. Strange bedfellows.
I believe that it was truthful as well, but why did the White House fold like a cheap camera and "take back" the so-called "16 words" after Joe Wilson's pack of lies about it was printed in the NYT?
I never thought that the President lied about WMDs.
Many would have been better served if he'd put up a more rigorous defense of the presence of WMDs and of Iraqi
ties to a number of terrorist groups to include Al Qaeda.

Thanks for the ping!
Thanks for the ping Tonk.
Just reaffirms what many of us already knew.
Here's a guess at their reaction:
"Hey, that's ancient history! Don't try to hang that on me, this is about the failed policies of the Bush White House. Show me the weapons. Show me the weapons!!! No, those are old GW1 weapons, I wanna see NEW weapons. Yeah, but it's just a trace uhhh.... BUSH LIED!"
Timing is everything. The "WMD was a lie" drumbeat has not reached its crescendo ... yet.
Waiting.....
Still waiting.........
Still waiting...........................................
BTTT
the yellow cake story was ALWAYS TRUE. The forged documents were planted by operatives (likely french) as a means to discredit the entire story.
