Parents file suit challenging schools' moment of silence

07:15 PM CST on Monday, March 13, 2006

By KATHERINE LEAL UNMUTH / The Dallas Morning News

An atheist couple whose children attend a Carrollton-Farmers Branch elementary school have filed a complaint in federal district court arguing that the state’s mandated moment of silence in public schools is unconstitutional.

David and Shannon Croft named the school district and Gov. Rick Perry in their complaint, filed Friday. In it, they say one of their children was told by a teacher to be quiet because the minute is a “time for prayer.”

“I do not believe there is any secular reason for a moment of silence,” said Mr. Croft, 37, a computer programmer. “This is just a ruse to get prayer in school without calling it prayer in school. Is there any study showing a moment of silence helps education?”

Since 2003, Mr. Croft has documented his battle against perceived church-state violations at Rosemeade Elementary, where his three children attend. His past complaints, he said, include objecting to religious-themed songs such as “Silent Night” and “God Bless the U.S.A.,” Good News Bible Club meetings at the school and a poster reading “In God We Trust.”

"Mr. Croft said his children sometimes feel uncomfortable because of their refusal to say the pledge or sing certain songs he believes promote religion."

Well, we cannot have people feeling uncomfortable...

OK...now where in the Constitution does he say kids can't be silent in school? Where do they find these numb-skulls?

Guy should take his kids out of public school, where they are going to feel even more uncomfortable as the years go on, and stick them into some sort of private school.

Maybe the Christian children feel uncomfortable being glared at by a bunch of atheists during the moment of silence. What about their feelings? What about the teacher's feelings being glared at by these people? I feel overwhelmed just thinking about it. Can't we all ... just get along?

I think his poor little kids might have a whole life ahead of them being uncomfortable, thanks to him.

"Secularism" (ATHEISM) is the defacto state religion. Learn it, love it, live it.

We must all acknowledge the no god God as the one true faith. Stop making the atheists feel uncomfortable.

It's time Mr. Croft and others of his ilk get their asses kicked every time they venture out doors. I would like to show him what uncomforable realy is. I'm sick to death of these people.

Once again, 99% of the people will be subjugated to the will of the 1%. I'll bet his kids feel uncomfortable because they can't be like their peers.

I feel uncomfortable hearing of and thinking of people like Mr. Croft and spouse who have 0 tolerance for the beliefs and desires of others. What rude, crude people. Let the parents take responsibility for the discomfort of their offspring.

This school should abandon the moment of silence, since that smacks of supporting religion. Instead, they should give 5 minute speeches everyday about why atheism is a dumb way to go through life, and explain that so much that is wrong with the world is the fault of atheists.

Since atheism is not a religion, it has no Constitutional protection, so there should be no problem with this.

My son goes to the school district literally right next door to this school district and we do the momeny of silence as well. I have been there in the class, office, and other parts of the school during this moment, and everyone is fine with it!

I get real tired of one person thinking they have a right to take away what everyone else thinks is fine!

Insanity. It's freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion that is guaranteed.

ARRRRGGG. The guy was raised here. Glad he left.

I am confounded by how a universe could come to exist from null.

That is not the only thing that confounds him. Quantum Mechanics must postively addle, bewilder, and dumbfound him.
