Fire at US military base in S. Korea, arson suspected

16 March 2006

SEOUL - A fire at the main US military base in South Korea injured three South Korean workers early Thursday and destroyed four buildings, police said, and a woman was being questioned in a possible arson attack aimed at the US.

The workers were being treated for second-degree burns, an official at the Yongsan police station said without giving his name, citing official policy.

The fire at the Yongsan Garrison destroyed buildings including a storage house before it was extinguished around 5:30 a.m. after burning for nearly four hours.

Police were questioning a 57-year-old South Korean woman found on the base who claimed she started the fire after sneaking onto the base.

However, it was unclear how the suspect - who has a record of treatment for mental disease - managed to enter the base when all the gates were locked, police said.

“I started a fire with a lighter after sneaking into the base to punish (the US) for its terrorist activities,?the woman was quoted as telling police, according to Yonhap news agency.

The US base in central Seoul is set in coming years to move to a new location in Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometers (40 miles) south of the capital, and the land to be turned back over to South Korea.

According to local reports, the blaze was so intense that 60 S. Korean fire engines had to be called in. The base firefighters could not handle it. Ping!

If only there was a law in S Korea that anyone who attacks the SK military or those of it's allies would be immediately deported to North Korea.

Re #5

There are suddenly many cooks acting up in S. Korea. They jump from the bridge, set themselves on fire, running around and attack people.

Roh's pinko regime somehow ushered in the open season for kooks, like a wild fire from nowhere. I guess kooks beget more kooks.:)

I lived at this base. It is not dificult for locals to get on base. They simply have to have i.d. and be accompanied by a U.S. service man.
Happens every day and night. G.I.s go just up the road to I ta wan and pick up prostitutes and bring them back to the barracks.
Then the working girls can leave after their business transaction is complete and not even have to be accompanied.
