You've got to live in the region to understand how completely tyrannical, dispicable and corrupt is the Broward County Sheriff's Dept. It would only be analogous to the Stalin's NKVD with uniforms. I overheard a conversation in the Broward County Courthouse cafeteria between and among deputies that would curl the hair of the Dept. of Justice civil rights division. Apparently these cretins don't care who is in ear shot of their bragging about how they've ''beat the crap'' out of defendants and covered up for each other or, from another deputy in the group, about a briefcase of ''powder'' that just appeared under hatchback carpet of a guy's Firebird. I surmise they knew I wasn't a criminal defense lawyer (or even a lawyer at all for that matter) because I was in a jogging outfit and wearing a unit baseball cap I had recently obtained at a reunion in Las Vegas. This was approximately 18 months ago.

Is this a big local story in Broward COunty, or just a "wonk" topic?

It's big here because Ken Jenne took over the police departments of the smaller towns in Broward and even attempted to take over Fire Rescue here. Basically, Jenne wanted to set himself up as the Boss of Broward using the Sheriff's department as his tool. The key to that tool was proof that he lowered crime which he did by falsely cooking the crime stats. The ones who have taken the heat for this are some lower level cops. The big cop brass and Jenne who forced the lower level cops to fudge the stats have not allowed the blame to be put where it deserves---on themselves.

In the meantime Ken Jenne's political career is in shambles because of this scandal.
