6 KKK members plead in gun plot
Prosecutors say bombing planned

Andrea Weigl, Staff Writer

Six Klu Klux Klan members pleaded guilty Monday to running an illegal gun-trading scheme that officials say was designed to finance a plan to blow up the Johnston County courthouse.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Goulian said Daniel L. Barefoot, Sharon Renee Barefoot, Jonathan A. Avery, Jonathan Maynard, Marvin G. Gautier and Rossie Lynwood Strickland pleaded guilty to various charges ranging from conspiracy to possession of stolen firearms. They all agreed to cooperate with investigators as part of their plea agreements, Goulian said.

Only one co-defendant, Michael A. Brewer, still has pending charges. No trial date has been scheduled yet for Brewer.

Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell has said all seven were affiliated with a splinter group in southern Johnston County.

The Barefoots are the son and wife of Charles Robert "Junior" Barefoot, former grand dragon of the North Carolina chapter of The National Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. In 2001, Barefoot formed the Nation's Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. He and three others were charged in the 2003 slaying of a fellow Klan member whose body was found in a Sampson County field. Barefoot remains in custody at Central Prison in Raleigh.

Charles Barefoot also faces federal charges related to explosives found in his Benson home in June 2002.

While Charles Barefoot is not charged in the illegal gun ring, Goulian told a federal judge Monday that Charles Barefoot was involved.

In October 2001, more than 30 guns were stolen from an outbuilding owned by Maynard's uncle, Goulian said. The guns were cleaned of fingerprints, stashed in barns and then sold, he said.

Yes, one wonder why they wanted to bomb the courthouse. Boredom? Barefoot or Barfoot is a not uncommon name in that part of North Carolina. I think it is possible these family of Barefoots' may have links to the whatever klan group going back several generations. I remember seeing the family name on a listing of klansmen from the Wilson-Johnson county area back in the mid 60's.

They planned to bomb a courthouse. They're terrorists. Send them to Guantanamo, feed 'em rice, give 'em a Quran, and forget about 'em.

Yes, one wonder why they wanted to bomb the courthouse.

I presume they were targeting the judge responsible for Charles Barefoot's incarceration and that the Johnson County courthouse is where his chambers are located.

Forget the rice - pull their teeth and feed 'em nothing but corn on the cob.

Oh, wait - they probably don't have any teeth...

I'll wait for the federal government to label this an act of turrorism. I also wait on the edge of my seat for grassroots 'conservatives' to call for this to be labeled an act of turrorism as well. Seeing as it fits all the same requirements....

"Forget the rice - pull their teeth and feed 'em nothing but corn on the cob."

LOL! Reminds me of my daughter's comment after she lost her front baby teeth. She told me she couldn't eat "corn on the cob" anymore, but she could eat "corn in a pile".

They may not have cared to look real hard, considering what they found last time around.

Good thing they got rid of the bad gang members in SC...

Now maybe the 500,000+ Illegal Alien gang bangers flooding the state with methamphetamine and committing rape, murder and home invasions will finally get some attention now that the resources have completed the 'big mission'...
