In case you've been worrying about how the war in Iraq will end, or the coming of avian flu, or the extinction of the universe as we drift into the cosmic void, well, relax. Here's something you should really fret about: the future of the U.S. economy in the age of globalization.
For a discussion of same, let me call your attention to an article in the March-April issue of Foreign Affairs by Princeton University economist Alan Blinder. The vice chairman of the Federal Reserve's board of governors from 1994 to 1996, Blinder is the most mainstream of economists, which makes his squawk of alarm all the more jarring. But the man has crunched the numbers, and what he's found is sure to induce queasiness.
In the new global order, Blinder writes, not just manufacturing jobs but a large number of service jobs will be performed in cheaper climes. Indeed, only hands-on or face-to-face services look safe. "Janitors and crane operators are probably immune to foreign competition," Blinder writes, "accountants and computer programmers are not."

"Janitors and crane operators are probably immune to foreign competition"
Note to self: Learn how to operate cranes.
The folks who should worry about their job security are the journalists who work for Dinosaurs like the Washington Post. Who needs 'em??
Anything that encourages more unions is direct poison to the economy. End of statement.
Heck no. I try to eliminate my job within 12 months of taking it. If I don't, then I haven't created enough efficiency for the time I've worked at it.
I'm on my 6th company and approximately 20th job. Mostly, I triple productivity and then move on to the next thing.
Every job should be eliminated. And in so doing, create dozens more. It's the American Way! (tm)
Really. I think I read this same story back in 1981. I notice his big solution is to unionize 50 million private sector job. Another liberal who believes that only the French Model can save us.
my job will survive and I'm in IT :)
har har har....
The only reason these services are cheaper elsewhere is that foreign exchange rates are out of whack. If exchange rates were based on the cost of goods, Chinese factory workers and Indian programmers would be a lot more expensive.
These problems are starting to correct themselves already. Indian IT salaries are rising at 30% a year as shortages of skilled workers develop, while the Chinese factories now have to have recruiting drives to get the hands they need.
Yup, all of us with IT knowledge or degrees will be safe. You can't outsource that.
OK then, I vote for French Model Laetitia Casta
=
well I have a trump even too that :)
A security clearance :)
Hey, now, c'mon, they have got to try to get the economy to tank in time for the elections.
Dare I say it? "Bush's Fault!"
Wasn't there something awhile ago about China deliberately undervaluing their currency to keep the trade up with the US?
That same bilge does seem to get recycled by the media. I wonder which country will be next week's villain?
I'd believe it...
Saddam did the same thing.
Right off the bat, promoting that old myth. (It's not MY job.)
DOh! One thing I wish I had, but my dumbf*** Uncle with his prison sentence was the finishing blow.
